VPS Updates

Bear with me, as I am asking for a third party…. I will try to give all pertinent information.

I am working with my dad trying to get his Avast to update the VPS automatically. Things were fine through his dial up for about a year. Since DSL was installed August 2, he got no automatic updates of the VPS, nor did he receive the program update message. Recently, Windows Security Center told him he was not protected, so he called me (August 21). He had already renewed his licenses and correctly installed the key, as verified in the About Avast choice.

1.) I had him check to see that he was set up for the automatic updates (he was).
2.) I had him uncheck the Update (Connections) Setting by un-checking that he connects through a dial up modem (we had never changed that when he got the DSL). On his next restart, he got the pop up about a program update being available, but is VPS still did not update. I have a hunch this may have been a key step.
3.) I had him do the Test Connection under the proxy settings, and it said proxy settings were correct.
4.) I had him update the program, which was successful. At this point, I am assuming the program update included the most recent VPS, as his Security Center warning disappeared, and Avast said he had VPS 0634-0, dated August 21.

5.) He has no firewall other than the Windows built in one, and no changes were made there… And it did connect and download the program, so it does not seem as though anything is being blocked there. I even had him try to do a manual update (after all was done), and it did connect and say he was up to date, so the connection is okay.

My question is… should he begin getting his updates automatically again? If he does not, what can we check?

Ok.

You must ‘check’ the option permanent connected.
You must set the VPS update info in Update (Basic) > Details…

Can you manually update?

Assumption correct: program update includes VPS update.

Most probably the Details buttom above could give us some info…

Okay, this may sound dumb, but I don’t know if he can manually update, as I had him do the program update before trying. When I did have him try to manually update, however, it apparently connected okay because it was able to see he was already up to date.

In his Update (basic) Details, there is nothing suspect… He is set to normal mode, all five boxes on the right are checked, it looks for updates every 240 minutes, and the push is not enabled (one benefit of the two of us using the same AV - makes troubleshooting somewhat easier, as I can just look at my screen when he calls and compare…)

Thanks (and I do tell everyone about this forum as a reason Avast is better than other free (even pay) AV’s…

I guess a specific question is, would having the dial up connection box checked before have kept him from getting auto updated, even though he was in fact connected?

 Hi hrova :

From my limited knowledge of the Avast program, I would
say "Yes" to the question in the last paragraph .

As to ALL 5 being checked in "Update ( Basic ) Details" , it
implies he has NOT "merged" the Avast "i" & "a" balls,
which would save space in his System Tray . To do so,
RIGHT- click on Icon in System Tray, select "VRDB", then
click on "Merge.........." .

The show icon in task bar tray in the Update (Basic), Details, relates to the update icon (the Red and Green arrows) and not the avast icon. So there is no implication there about the other avast icon/s.

The new/latest default setting for the Details is not to have this ticked as there are other indicators to show if an update is in progress. In the past this icon was displayed when checking for updates even if one wasn’t subsequently found. Now I believe it is only displayed if an update is available and being downloaded.

Today’s update was automatic - guess the trick was telling it he didn’t use dial up anymore…

Thanks all, for your time…
