VRDB Generation Problem

I left Avast! VRDB-ing for an entire day, an it still didnt finish, i only installed it recently so it is effectively useless untill i get a VRDB done.

Are their any known problems with VRDB generation?

can anyone help? :S

any help wud be appreciated, thanx

Welcome to avast forums-
What other scanners do you have installed?
Try restarting in safe-mode and running the VRDB.
And you might as well do some “housecleaning” while in safe-mode too ;D

i had pc cillin installed too, but got rid of that today, well i tried uninstall kept lockin so i removed it manually.

ill try the safe more VRDB thanx

hmmm, in safe mode i tried to generate a VRDB but nothin happens :S

how long is VRDB ment to take nomally neway?

For the first time It might take a while but not all night.
How many AV’s have you tried on your system? You may need to do some serious house cleaning. If you like to install and uninstall programs, you have a lot of garbage left over that needs a good clearing out. Are you using XP?
I have a link to a good site for performance tweaks on my site.

I had the same problem on mine when I started up on avast!. I eventually traced it to a non-formatted sector on my hard disc. On my computer it shows up as E:drive when I click on My Computer. One of the gurus on this forum suggested the reason to me. Either format the sector ot shut off VRDB generation.

Gene…

As far as I remember, the problem with unformatted partition appeared when scanning “all local disks” - it didn’t have anything to do with VRDB generation (or am I wrong?)

zeroblackstar: what is your machine, how much diskspace do you have?

Good memory Igor (or else good search). While discussing the “scan error” problem on this forum, I was also at annoyances.org trying to solve the “hard drive activity light on continuously” problem. The unformatted segment solution cropped up both places. Everytime I went to Task Manager the hard drive activity would stop so I couldn’t pin it down right away. I still have not formatted E:drive so I have VRDB generation turned off and do a C:drive only scan with the folder select option.

ive got XP pro with all the updates an a 40G HD (about 70% of wich is used)

ive only ever had pc cillin on my comp, but the update thingie ran out so i went lookin elsewere, an found avast!

my comp is reletively new, so there shouldbt be too much clutter, an besides ive gone through my HD as as well as the registry etc an got rid of loads of rubbish.

my drive isnt partitioned, an im pretty sure it all properly formatted etc

if i turn VRDB off i wont be able to repair infected files, only delete, an ive sumin serious got infected i really dont wanna have to re install everythin…

i jus have no idea why the bloody thing wont work lol

but thanx for the help guys

Is there anything unusual in Avast’s log file?
Have you checked the system and event log in XP for errors?

For the last two logs you can use http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO and www.google.com to find out more about the error(s) and their solution(s)

nope nothin unusual in the avast! logs

im not sure about the XP ones though, where wud i find those?

The logs in XP can be reach by:

  1. Right click “my computer”
  2. Choose manage

oh right, thanx

erm, there are quite a few errors, warnings etc

but none that mention avast!

Well, although they are not related to Avast (or at least it seems that way) it never harms to solve them

ive gone through em, an theyre all jus like this:

“windows is shit and crashed like it usually does”

there not really alot to resolve, my system is pretty new so there aint much wrong with (thank god)
