How do you know it’s generating? Maybe it’s already done its job. You can verify this by starting avast! and checking out the VRDB line.
The default period for VRDB generation is 3 weeks. See online help for more info.

hi vik…
thanks for your reply…
i know it’s generating because i set it to ‘generate when idle’…so i observed that if my mouse is idle for about 5 seconds…my hard disk starts working…and it stops when i move my mouse again…
so i left my computer for a while…and when i started avast after i came back…the VRDB is updated…
however i don’t know why the VRDB icon doesn’t spin anymore…good news is avast icon is still spinning… ;D
I observed the same.
After installation of the latest avast program update and following install of May 14th virus database update the vrdb gets updated (quite heavy disk activity) but the vrdb icon does not spin.
running avast4! on a XP Pro SP1 system.

hi drahnier…
are we the only two who got this problem?..strange…keep me update if you happen to solve it…thanks…
well, I have now three notebboks here which show this phenomenon. no spinning of vrdb icon.
all notebooks are set up pretty the same: xp pro sp1, avast4 home.
maybe one of the “officials” can comment on this?

Guys, do you have the a- and i-ball icons merged?
Vlk
yes. they’re merged here. but despite of that, i would swear there was some visual feedback in the past whenever vrdb generation started.
is there a way to manually force a vrdb generation (without editng the avast4.ini)?
drahnier
OK, there was a bug. Found it and fixed it. Will be in the next update.

No, but it’s something we’re aware of as a popular wish and will be (hopefuly) included in avast 4.1.
Sorry for this,
Vlk
Thanks for fixing this, Vlk.
And let me repeat that I am VERY satisfied with Avast4! in general (and being a computer professional I know what I am talking about).

cheers vlk… ;D ;D ;D
Coming in a bit late on this one, but neither the “A” ball nor the “I” ball rotate in my setup. Run NT4 service pack 6a. Also run Zone ALarm Pro firewall, but both Avast programs are enabled there.
Seem to remeber that the balls did rotate initially.
is your resident shield on?
dranhier,
Yes, there is a way to force the VRDB update but you need to modify the ini file.
Go into the Avast folder…Avast4…Data…
Look for the Configuration file (.ini). See if there is a section labeled [VRDB]. If there is, add this line below it: RunInterval=5
If not, add [VRDB] after the last line in the file.
Then, add this line below it: RunInterval=5
The new section should look like this:
[VRDB]
RunInterval=5
Note: Default between generating VRDG is 3 weeks, but the
RunInterval line changes it to whatever you put AFTER the = in minutes. In the case above, I had you set it to generate a VRDB, 5 minutes after you save the file.
This is how you force the update. After the VRDB finishes, don’t forget to go back and change it to whatever you want.
I have mine set for 10080 which represents 7 days (60 x 24 x 7).
Easy huh!
As for the icon that does not rotate…
Force the update and see if it rotates, if not…
You will need to reinstall Avast 4 like I did unless one of the Moderators has a new idea.
Good Luck
For me the A-ball rotates, but the VDRB icon doesn’t move a bit.
Well, I was aware of this method. An yes, for may people this is quite easy.
But as I was recommending avast! 4 to a person more or less computer-illiterate (running under a restricted user account and not allowed to edit any such files) I explicitly asked for a method not involving ini file editing.
Thanks for your answer anywa.

no worries…accoring to vlk…it’s a bug and will be fixed in the next update… ;D ;D
Yep… a BUG ;D
Has been fixed, already, now testing (but looks OK)
cool!!!.. ;D ;D ;D
cheers vlk!!!..keep up the great work!! ;D
just curious when is the next update be released?
