Hi, I got a W8.1 laptop, make Asus.
It has a graphic card (make Nvidia) aboard.
Will this cause a problem for W10, how to precheck online whether laptop is suitable to upgrade?
Best regards, Hermie
If the laptop came with 8.1 installed there should be no reason why Win10 wouldn’t work.
Nvidia works fine with Win10, you only have to visit the Nvidia driver page to see Win10 is covered http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Thanks CraigB for your reply.
The graphic card Geforce 720M is supported by Nvidia, only W10 32 bit that is.
W10 is 64 bit, may that cause any problem?
Will W10 automaticly download the new driver for the graphic card? (no need for manual download)
Best regards, Hermie
No problem, it only means the driver is 32 bits (as most applications/drivers are).
64 bits only means it can run on systems that have hardware that can handle 64 bits instructions.
To say it really simple:
Let’s say there is a road with a sign that says you are allowed to drive 200 km/h on it.
That doesn’t mean if your car only can go up to 125 km/h you can’t drive that road.
There can always something go wrong when upgrading/installing something.
A good practice is to create a image of the drive/system before making changes.
Hi Eddy, nice to “meet” you again.
Q1) Will W10 download & install the Nvidia driver?
Q2) How to create a image of the drive/system on USB stick?
I do look forward to hearing from you again, thanks in advance.
Best regards, Hermie
Q1]
It should do so without a problem.
Q2]
There are many (free) tools that can create a image.
CloneZilla is just one of them http://clonezilla.org/
If you gonna use that one, I suggest to also get: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php
It will cost you 1 cd, but you will have something that you can boot from if booting from the hd doesn’t work
I’m not sure if you are saying that your system is 32 or 64 bit :-\ but Nvidia have drivers for both in the 720m, Windows update will install the latest drivers for you so if you don’t want the extra bloat like G-Force experience you’ll need to uninstall it afterwards or do a custom install with the links below.
32 bit 226mb download http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/94216/en-us
64 bit 287mb download http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/94216/en-us
Also Win 7 - 8 and 10 are capable of making system images with what come pre-installed in Windows via Control Panel - Security and Maintenance, no need for third party software
Thanks CraigB and Eddy for your replies.
I assume that Microsoft will have an option to save settings and information during the upgrade process to Windows 10.
Am I right?
USB flash drive can do the job?
Kind regards, Hermie
The settings in Win10 are somewhat different. But once installed go to "settings’ and go from there.
Check out this thread and learn a lot more than we can explain here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=156141.msg1131585#msg1131585
You will need both Microsoft Updates KB2976978 and KB3035583 to upgrade to Win10.
To find out if these are on your computer…Control Panel>Update>use the search box.
Once installed you will get free Win10 upgrades for the next 10 years on your machine.
Win10 is here to stay. Personally I would suggest you upgrade. It could take up to an hour
for the upgrade to complete and don’t leave your computer for extended periods of time.
A short break from time to time is not a bad idea though.
FYI, imho Win10 is much better than Win8.1 8)
