It will be interesting to see how FF3 plays out. We seem to have quite a few Win9x users here on avast and even more in the recent transfers from AVG. Since FF3 (apparently - have not tried myself) will not install on Win9x systems then there will be, before long, a bunch of avast users on a browser (FF2) that is no longer supported - especially for security fixes.
Most likely June…or maybe, even later. Release Candidate 2 is out for Windows US English version and other language versions. For other operating systems, follow the parent directory link.
Even Microsoft ended the support of Windows 98 as well as ME on 11th of July 2006. Opera can be a good solution for the users of those operation systems.
Due to incompatibilities with the Cairo interface used in version 1.9 of the Gecko Layout Engine, future versions of Mozilla Firefox, starting with the upcoming 3.0 release, will no longer support Windows 98 or Windows Me,[5] but all versions of the Opera (web browser) up to and including the latest 9.5 beta release continue to function.Pick your choice depending on your environments and preferences, as usual.

Microsoft’s support of them (or lack it) was the unspoken (those dates are well known) part of my point … avast’s continued support of them and the follow on effort in the forums is the clear part. Opera is very much a bit player and so we will end up with a group of users that the mainstream of helpers in the forum cannot (with any degree of certainty) assist. We are already seeing those helpers having to remember to differentiate more and more for the Win9x users as new features are created that do not apply.
I have to doubt that avast derives any significant income from the users of the Win9x systems though continuing support must generate some degree of goodwill.
I suppose that I’m approaching the point which I imagine must be part of discussion of the future in Prague - how long will it make sense for avast to continue support of Win9x when we see an increasing number of product developers saying “time to move on”?
Hi Rumpelstiltskin,
Yes the rumours are there: http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?no_d2=1&sid=06/06/08/1240239
There will be ports for Win98 off-course (apps version could be a good alternative for the pre Win 2K users) or they have to change to Flock 1.1

This is the better side of open-source project, I guess.
