hello, this morning I received a warning from avast saying that my registration for version 4.8 will expire in 20 days. In the same window warning there is a note with the upgrade to the new 5.0. What I need to do?
click on INSTALL of the upgade 5.0 and then registration?
forget about avast note, to register new licence and then download and install the 5.0?
can I install the 5.0 over without deleting the old version?
If you install 5.0 over 4.8 your current registration will be transferred. So you would be getting into the same area requiring registration in 5.0.
So my suggestion is that you download avast 5.0 and save it to your hard disk for use later.
Uninstall 4.8 and reboot.
Install avast 5.0 and reboot.
Left click on the new Orange avast icon in the system tray.
Select the Maintenance, Registration section.
Now there should be a big Register now button, click that and complete the form.
There is no need to wait for the email and insert a key as all this is done on within the avastUI (avast user interface).
On two different Vista machines. On one it worked on the other it didn’t. One of the scanners was refusing to start. So a clean install is the best way to go.
Pondus is correct, as upgrading 5.0 over 4.8 works fine, and the 20 days will carry over, however, you’ll have 20 days to register 5.0.
so DavidR’s advice might be the easier route for you.
just last week I finally upgraded to 5.0 free over the top of 4.8 free, on two vista basic laptops, and had absolutely no problems whatsoever. My registration carried over with the upgrade.
I waited this long because of all the complaints, but I felt it was safe enough now, and Im very glad I did, 5.0 is very different that 4.8, and I feel it is better all around. I kinda wish I wouldnt have waited so long lol
Well avast 5.0 is working for millions of users right now, yes, for some it isn’t working and that is not good. But to say it is a mess is patently wrong.
If you don’t try you will never know how it works on your system and You can still go back to 4.8 if you do find it isn’t working on your particular system. But for tom2112ny to say don’t bother its a mess (doesn’t work) is a sweeping statement that clearly isn’t the case and is kind of self defeating.
If you also check tom2112ny’s other posts, you will find that there is a possibility that there is a possible problem with other security application remnants on his system which can have a major impact. So it isn’t a clear cut issue only with avast 5.0.
My suggestion to you is to proceed as I suggested.
Personally I wouldn’t go that way as you will only carry forward the remainder of your registration period. This would mean you have to wait for 5.0 to notify you of the registration as it doesn’t notify as early as 4.8 as you don’t have to wait for an email and enter the key, etc.
so DavidR's advice might be the easier route for you.
