I have a problem with webshield in that it stops some web pages loading after the initial header. Details are:
On the popup webshield just displays the main web address but then ceases to load the remainder of the page. For example when I go to www.betanews.com the popup shows scanning www.betanews. com and the fails to download anything else.
This problem only appears on a few web pages some of the others are pcpitstop.com, download.com, yet there is no problem with grc.com, gateworld.net or majorgeeks.com the popup shows elements loading, although according to firefox the page does not completly load 'cos the little whirly thing at the top of the page continues to rotate although the page appears complete.
Thanks for your help in this problem it’s greatly appreciated.
WinXPsp2 Zonealarm Pro Spywareblaster Spyware Guard IE6 and Firefox. All up to date. DSL connection no proxy.
Have just tried on IE and BTYahoo browser. IE gave a server not found page, however BTYahoo had no problems at all yet I use the same settings for all browsers…
If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.
Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer [/i]
So IE cannot even query DNS for this host? Interesting… Are you using a software firewall? If so, which one? Can it be that it’s blocking some of your traffic?
winXP pro SP2, Firefox 1.0 , thunderbird 1.0 , DSL connection through a router… no proxy
everything updated… once i updated avast last night i noticed that the webshield and webmail shield block me from browsing ANY pages in IE or firefox and i can’t check my mail unless i switch off webshield and internet mail…
are there alot of people with this problem?
example of IE error text;
"HTTP 504 - Gateway timeout
avast! Web Proxy
When the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, contacted the upstream content server, it did not receive a timely response.
That “Gateway timeout” was exactly the same error I got before I found that ZA hadn’t given the Web shield access rights. Probably because its request to do so got buried under something else on-screen.
Check the Programs-permissions page in ZA, you can change the permission status manually there (click on the “X” or whatever and then choose to permit it).
I know this isn’t entirely relevant at this point, but I’d like to mention that I’m having no problems with Avast 4.6 and the latest version of Kerio Personal Firewall, and I’ve used both Firefox 1.0 (my main browser) and the most updated version of IE. Operating system is a fully patched Win XP Home.
He was refering to a popup from a firewall, asking for permissions for ashWebSv.exe…
Unfortunately, we’re bemused to find that a number of renowed firewalls somehow don’t work correctly - simply fail to ask and deny all network access for this process. While this is not really an avast problem, we understand that average users won’t understand what’s going on and simply feel that “avast is blocking access to the Internet”. We’ve spent a lot of time testing webshield with all major firewalls - and yet it seems that on some machines, it still doesn’t work correctly.
beebot, you didn’t quote the Gateway Timeout message in its entirety There’s a paragraph about the possibility that this is caused by a firewall blocking access to ashWebSv.exe. I think this is the case here.
well, i thought it might be zone alarm too, so I checked the permissions and fixed it. I still get the same problems for some reason.
Even with zonealarm disabled i get this gateway error. So right now if i want to browse i have to switch off webshield, same goes for if i want to check mail. This kind of defies the point of having avast running at all ;D… Its just wierd because i really cant see why its coming up with any error ???. I have been running avast for over a year now with no problems so far until i updated last night.
hmm i’ll let avast run some checks to see if i have any horrible nasties on this pc anyway and check back later. cheers for the help guys ;D
nevermind! i managed to fix it :-X and yes it was a bug with my zonealarm install. for some reason it only seemed to take notice of the new permissions for ashserve.exe after i did a restart >:(
any other free firewalls out there that are recommended?
sorry if that got a little confusing there and thanks again
