I’m helping a friend out with his computer… (Fun being the “computer” guy, huh?) He managed to download every trojan, worm, virus and malware known to the internet. And all this with Mcafee in place. LOL. Anyways, I cleared everything out with Ad-Aware and Spybot, then I installed Avast and cleared everything through those scans. But after Avast got up and running, the only websites he could get to were https ones. After I turned Web Shield off, he could get to the whole internet. I added an exception to the windows firewall for Avast, but it didn’t help. Am I missing something here? Right now it’s just a standard install of Avast with none of the settings changed, same as my machine which works fine. We live 100 yards away and are on the same ISP. Any ideas?
The web shield isn’t a blocker, unless you have added them to the URL Blocking of the web shield.
The symptoms you describe, only being able to connect to https (avast doesn’t monitor https as it is encrypted, only port 80 http traffic) and being able to connect with the web shield disabled sounds like the web shield is being blocked and not the other way round.
There might be remnants of McAfee (if indeed you only have the XP firewall) ?
McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

Hi,
I had the same issue.
Mail, IM, p2p and https sites are ok
non-https sites keep loading for a very long time, sometimes til timeout.
After I uninstalled Avast, everything worked fine
I’m quite disapointed, because I had the same problem a fex month ago (nov 2007), a tech from my ISP came to diagnose and only found the problem was’nt an ISP one. But it cost me 50 euros.
I installed another antivirus.
Edit after DabidR answer :
I never installed McAfee. I run Vista Enterprise.
On Nov 2007, I was running XP Pro
It would have been nice if you had posted when you had the problem so we could have tried to help you, rather than make your first post after installing another AV ???
I didn’t know this website. I just found it today, as I’m looking for an explanation.
Anyway, I couldn’t have posted before uninstalling Avast, because, I was unable to surf while Avast running
But if a solution is found, I could re-install Avast. I was quite satisfied with it, unless the first problem I had
Probably, McAfee firewall is blocking ashWebSv.exe (the WebShield executable). Can you check?
By the way, if McAfee is installed, avast won’t work with it. You need fully uninstall McAfee before, disable is not enough.

If you’re talking to me, yeah, I can do that tomorrow. I didn’t realize that Mcafee and Avast didn’t play nice, but it makes perfect sense. I’ll post up the results after I see him tomorrow. Hopefully I can convince him that bloated corporate junkware is the devil so he’ll let me uninstall it.
Besides being the corporate devil you mention, it hasn’t done him much good to date for the money he paid.
Yeah, I was talking to you
Post the results back.
