web shield doesnt seem to be working

Its been staying at 0/0 and doesnt seem to be working with firefox.

Is it working with any browser IE, etc. ?
Has it previously worked ?

What is your operating system and firewall ?
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Not sure if it works with any other browsers, and it has previously worked. I have windows 7 64 bit and the only other antivirus is malwatebytes. Norton did come installed with the system however but it was never activated.

It may never have been activated but there are probably still low level drivers loaded on there pre-installed options. You should remove it using Control Panel, Programs and Features and it is probably a goo idea to run the removal tool to ensure all remnants are gone.

Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc. Item 26a in the list.

Once you have done that reboot and see if that resolves it - If not try a repair of avast:
Win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

I repaired it and it still doesn’t seem to be working, still at 0/0. Windows said say it might have not uninstalled properly after it finished repairing, but I don’t believe that’s the case.

EDIT: I was looking around in the avast! settings and “Do not use Chrome as default avast! browser” was unchecked. Does this mean that it will only scan links in Google Chrome? That could be a reason why, correct?

Apparently no response and I need some help. It still isn’t active, I have no idea what is wrong here.

Did you uninstall Norton and use the removal tool ?

I’m not 100% sure exactly what this does internally, but it certainly doesn’t mean that it will only scan links in chrome.

My best guess is, it is some sort of internal thing if you happen to have installed chrome, but it isn’t your default browser and you don’t want avast to use chrome when you click links within the avast program to use chrome. The default is unchecked, I don’t have chrome installed, but I have still checked that option as I want absolutely nothing to do with chrome.

I used the removal tool and unistalled Norton. Still 0/0.

I think you are probably looking at a clean reinstall of avast if having done that and the avast Repair didn’t work.

  • Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1456 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using Programs & Features, Uninstall/Change, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

EDIT 2am here and I’m calling it a night.

I really dont want to reinstall it, so I’m just going to call it quits aswell. Very confusing, if it is possible can someone else possibly help me? I;m just afraid if getting a virus as its being reinstalled.

If you follow the order I gave, first download all that you need (program and uninstall utility) saved to your hard disk.

Then and only then reinstall that way you aren’t going on-line without protection.

I’m not very smart with this kind of stuff, how do I restart it in safemode?

Time to revive this as a clean install gave me a blue screen and it is still at 0/0.

Restarting in safemode is achieved by tapping f8 while booting the system then click enter on safemode when the screen appears.

Have you followed the procedure that DavidR layed out for you ?, running the norton removal tool then boot to safemode and run the avast uninstall tool, reboot back to normal mode and reinstall avast.

Note that if any other AV’s have been used in the past you should also run removal tools for these too from http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Is mail shield working?

If not it may be an aswrdr problem - both shields use the same redirect driver.

I did exactly what davidr told me to and removed all other antiviruses. Also, never used my mail shield so not sure if that could be it.
