For some reason, when my computer starts up an error message (10106) is displayed stating that web/news shields are not working. Going into settings does nothing. It is as if the mouse clicks are not being registered when I click on the buttons to turn the shields back on.
What would be causing this and how do I fix it? I also noticed that the daily definition updates stopped when this occurred. My copy is registered. Turning off XP’s firewall did nothing.
i don’t how to solve this problems.once i meet this problem,i uninstall avast and install the avira, then one day,i unstall avira and install avast, all functions are ok,so maybe you can have a try.
i guess reinstall your windows xp can solve the problem.
There appears to be too many posts by this user to uninstall/install as the first suggestion.
I need to know more information to help you:
What other antivirus, firewall, and other security software do you currently have on this system and did you have in the past? Very often remnants by security software are the culprits for not having other security software work properly.
What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit? – XP SP _?
You are using Avast Free 5.0.677 (no question).
How do you connect to the Internet? Broadband/cable, DSL, Dial-up, etc.?
Have you changed any of the default settings of Avast?
Please try to Repair Avast:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
Reboot.
Please report back on the above questions, and let me know if the Repair worked for you or not, then we’ll take it from there. Thank you.
The problem with Avast started before the installation of Spybot. I installed Spybot to see if there was anything at all that Avast might not be catching that may interfere with its operation. I’ve used Avast and Spybot together in the past with absolutely no issues. Are you recommending Mbam over Spybot because of known issues or because you prefer Mbam over Spybot?
There have been known issues with some users with SB and Avast, especially if you are using TT. Here are directions for uninstalling SB with Teatimer:
Uninstall Spybot S&D w/Teatimer: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html . In addition, you need to go into Advanced settings to disable the resident protection (2 areas to possibly disable – Teatimer and some IE blocking), then de-immunize if the immunity has been set. That takes a minute or more sometimes. The run the program’s own uninstaller, which should be in the Add/Remove Programs. Reboot.
Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
