Web Shield proxy - absolutely necessary?

I was reading some information in the Forum about setting up proxies for various web browsers when using the Web Shield.

Is it absolutely necessary to set proxy settings in the browsers in order to use the Web Shield? As is currently, the browsers connection settings are to use a direct connection to the Internet and Web Shield appears to be correctly working, as there is a scanned count shown in the settings. I’m not sure whether setting a proxy would change anything.

The system is using the built-in Windows XP firewall.

It is only necessary for old OSes, for XP the proxy is transparent it is automatically set-up.

The only other case is if you are using Zone Alarm Pro firewall which you aren’t.

Thank you.

Now that all of the past issues (memory) have been taken care of, avast! is running very well.

You’re welcome, glad to hear all is well.
