webcleaner.dll

Hi,
My first post here and hope someone can help.
I run into an error on occassion after a thorough scan. The latest one lists the following:
Documents/Settings/Owner.webcleaner.dll (I beleive this was found in my C file).
I can’t seem to do anything with it like add it to the Chest, and I am not sure if I should leave it there or try to delete it from the list.
Avast said no infected files were found, so what it this and what should I do about it?

Thank you.

Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.

Access denied means, generally, that the file is in use by another process (program) and cannot be repaired/cleaned/moved/handled by avast!

Welcome to avast!

Hi joanied,

I do not know of any interaction here:

Maybe somebody know why avast flags this as being in use by another process?

polonus

 From my limited knowledge in this area, a google “search”
implies this is part of Microsoft’s Operating System !?

Hi and thanks for the welcome!!

I sure appreciate the posts I got from each of you. I did a google search, which wasn’t much help. Then I went to the Windows Microsoft web site and did a search there…no luck, but they have several programs that will scan and list all your computers running processes…I downloaded a free one called “Kamzy Process Watcher”…it showed a list of 31 running processes on my puter, but none of them were the webcleaner.dll…huh!!

So then I used the link that polonus posted and read the ‘blog’ there…very interesting, and I do bleive it answered my question…if I read it correctly, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool will show up as 'webcleaner.cab or, I assume, webcleaner.dll.
I did install that from the Microsoft web site recently…so at least I do know now where it came from…
my next question is, what should I do…does Microsoft actually have programs that might be ‘infected’ with spyware ect??
Should I uninstall that ‘tool’ from my puter?

Thanks so much to you all, and now I’ll wait to see what you advise about the Malicious Software Removal Tool…webcleaner.dll

PS…guess I don’t know how to ‘attach’ the little smilies.

And…I forgot to mention, I did that 'Boot Scan"…archives & all…if there is a results list after the scan, it was so fast, I wasn’t able to read it…I did the boot scan 3 times, and never did catch the ‘results’, although, no red flags came up.
Is that OK??

Hi joanied,

Since you got no warnings or other “red flags” that should be OK.

To add a smiley, click on the place in the text box where you want the smiley to be. Then, select the smiley you want to use by clicking on it once. This will add the smiley to the text box where you want it to be.

Welcome to the forums. Please come back often, learn more, and maybe help someone.

Hi CharleyO ;D

Thank you… if there were any red flags from the Avast Boot Scan, I assume the screen would have stayed there long enough for me to read it…correcto ???

I am clicking where I want a smilie…I’ll see if it works, ‘cause it didn’t in my last post :’(

Again, thank so much…don’t know how often I’ll be here, and doubt I could offer any help…I am far from a puter techie type person…just do my best to TRY and understand stuff.

Have a great day!!

 Hi Joanied :

The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool is an
"update" that Microsoft offers monthly; if you elect to
install it, it runs and will ''delete" itself after it is done.
I have never heard of Kamzy Process Watcher before
your post; I certainly would NOT trust it to "guard" against
malware being installed on your computer. Much more
trustworthy is Win Patrol. As far as the BEST program on
what "running processes" are on your computer, that
would be "HijackThis", best downloaded from :
 www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe . This program
is mainly used when there are seriously problems with
one's computer. One of the best FREE antiSPYWARE
programs is Ad-Aware, best downloaded from :
 www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html .

Hi Spiritsongs,

Thank you ;D I didn’t even realize :-[ that the Microsoft Malicious Software Tool uninstalls itself after running!!
I have AdAware and run it every week, and after I browse the web. I have also used Hijack this on occassion. I used to have Win Patrol, but my puter crashed recently and the tech man that fixed it uninstalled quite a few things I had >:(…but hey, he installed Avast, so he can’t be all bad!!!

Think I’ll get back my Win Patrol…love that Scotty dog!!

Thanks again…and hope someone can tell me what to do about the webcleaner.dll.
