Webshield running but not scanning ?

 Hi , I wonder if you could help me please ? When I right click on the avast tray icon to bring up the on-access scanner interface and check the webshield provider , it says it’s currently been running around 4 hours , yet it shows nothing for last scanned , and scan count for it is shown as 0 . I’m puzzled as to whether it’s just being reported wrong on the interface , or if the webshield actually isn’t scanning anything even though it’s running ? I use Zonealarm free if that’s any help . Thanks for any help

Were you actually browsing any webpages in this 4 hour timeframe? Also which Windows are you using?

I’ve been on loads of different sites during the 4 hours . Also , my network shield shows up as scanned 0 too even though that’s been running the same amount of time . I’m using Windows XP service pack 2 and my Avast is the Home version . Thanks for your help

0 scanned files is normal for Network Shield. But it’s certanly not normal for Web Shield.
Which browser are you using? Did you read the 4h uptime in Web Shield provider?

Go here and try downloading one COM sample and one ZIP sample:
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

Tell us if you got dialog with only Terminate button or you got only normal warning dialog with several actions for detected file).

I did the com one and got the virus alert and had all the options available . As far as the zip goes , I’m not sure whether I’m supposed to download and open it , or just download itt , or open it online really  I’m using IE 6 . By the way , do any parts of Avast require Server access in Zonealarm ? Most programs ( almost all ) in Zonealarm just have a tick under access but a ? under server .

Aha,you’re using ZoneAlarm. I belive i know what’s the reason that your Web Shield doesn’t check anything.

First, make sure you give full internet access to all avast! components (they usually start with letters “asw”.

Second, check this video and do exactly as it shows:
http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/ws_ieproxy.htm

This should do the trick

 It’s working now thanks after typing in the proxy stuff . One more thing . Ive recently got a copy of Steganos Internet Anonym Pro 6 on a cover CD . It allows you to surf the internet ’ camouflaged ’ using proxys . I didn’t install it though because I guessed it might be incompatible with avast’s webshield due to that working via a proxy too . Is it possible to mix the two or are they just incompatible ?

In theory you can align more than one proxy: Intenet > proxy 1 > proxy 2 > you
But you’ll have to test which one will be 1 and which one the 2… Set the 2 into the 1 one, etc…
Using proxy (anonimous surfing) will make your connection speed drop down.

 I’m only on dial - up so I guess I won’t bother with that then . Thanks for your help
