What could be wrong with my computer?

Hi

When I was surfing on internet(IE8),computer showed me a message Stack overflow at line 0 after that my computer became extremely slow. What could be wrong with my PC,also I tried to scan my pc with Avast but Avast took 3 hours to scan 1000files,isn,t this a little too much time to scan only 1000files? Right know my PC works fine I used System Restore Point but still I want to know what was wrong and can I fix this problem.

Thank you very much for your help.

Bye Lep pozdrav

Hi

Bob thank you for your help I found something in your link but unfortunately it xxx solution did,t fix my problems. I still have extremely slow computer. I removed some old programs, files with CCleaner ran Defrag, scan my computer with Registry tool nothing my Pc is stil very slow. Maybe this information is not important I have 1GB big RAM but task manager show only 376MB.

PS:Maybe it was unnecessary but I scanned my PC also with OTL. (I saw many people here in Avast forum use this program)

Thank you for your help.

Bye. Lep pozdrav

OTL does show 1 Gb of RAM, but do you have an onboard graphic display or a separate card ? If it is an onboard one then that will use a set amount of your RAM for all graphics

Lets clear the temp files, what defrager are you using ?

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

[*] Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
[*]It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
[*]Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
[*]Once it’s finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

I have Ultimatedefrag and Nvida GeForce 7600GT (AGP-256MB).

When taskmanager reports the ram are you looking at the total or usable

I was looking for usable RAM in taskmanager.

PS: I ran TFC and TFC found/removed 158MB.

TFC does tend to clear a bit more rubbish

Run another defrag and see if that helps

Any suggestion for Defrag program?

Defraggler
http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

Auslogic Disk Defrag
Puran Defrag
Deffragler

Sorry but if you expect another defrag to greatly increase system speed,
you’ll be sadly disappointed.
Mathematically there might be a small increase in speed but not anything to
write home about. ;D

Thank you for your help right now I,m scanning my slow pc with Puran Defrag. Anyway do you have more solution to solve/fix my problem?

Have a nice day. Lep dan

If a system has a lot of rubbish on it that can slow down the seek time for the various portions of the programme and in extreme cases can slow the system down. OK not a good gain but, in some cases any gain is better than none. Another problem may be bad sectors on the hard drive. A slow computer is generally one of the hardest issues to resolve

Is any way to fix bad sectors?

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer

  1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
  2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
  4. Use the following procedure: β€’
β€’ To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

I already ran chkdsk but I didn,t see any improvements. What about MemTest?

Normally bad memory would give BSOD and stalled programmes but it could be worth a run

Do you have Memtest ?

No I don,t have Memtest. Do I really need CD/DVD for Memtest?

Afraid so as it will run outside windows, with Vista and 7 it is included
