Viruses are generally detected by their signatures or patterns and those signatures are kept in a file, usually encrypted to avoid false detection).

How does this differs with streaming updates actually? Just asking out of curiosity…
With the release of v2014 avast has implemented “continuous streaming updates”.
This gives the user up-to-the-minute protection. The CSU happens approximately every
3 1/2 to 4 minutes. Whenever there is a “regular” vps update the old CSU is included/cleaned.
Regular vps updates can also include minor “fixes”.

Streaming updates as mentioned come every 3/4 minutes, full VPS update might only come 1/2/3 times a day or sometimes none.
