What have I done wrong?

I was trying to install Mailwasher which I could not do. I was told by forum member
[not this forum] that the cause was due to avast. I switched avast off and when I tried to restart it I was unable to do so.

I tried un-install using the add and remove program but I kept receiving a message that it cant be un-installed because another program is using avast? I then thought I could install a new version of avast, this was unsuccessful - error message!

I’m unable to find out how to get avast up and running can someone help me please - I use Windows XP [SP2]

Many thanks

avast does not conflict with Mailwasher…
Do you have any other antivirus installed in this computer? Did you have in the past?
Any other security program?

I have no problem with avast and mailwasher pro, why could you not install it, e.g. what errors were/are you getting ?

avast will scan as you try to install but it doesn’t block and only alerts if there is malware detected if there is no alert then your installation should proceed as normal. I have recommended mailwasher to many on these forums and there are many mailwasher users, none have experienced this problem or reported it on the forums.

So avast isn’t stopping you installing mailwasher. You could pause the standard shield during the installation (provided you don’t go on-line) but it shouldn’t have any effect. If you can answer Tech’s question about other security software and AVs.

How did you try to uninstall avast ?
If you have a failed uninstall there could be remnants that could impact on trying to install. Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD so you can find it later. Reboot and try the add remove programs to uninstall, if that fails then run the uninstall utility, reboot and install the new version.

Hi DavidR

everytime I tried to install mailwash I get the same message see attachment. POP problem.

I can’t understand what I’m doing wrong. This is the second evening of trying to install mailwash and I have been receiving and sending emails with no trouble in the slightest.

Apart from this doesn’t look like you can’t install mailwasher, it looks like it is installed and checking for emails. That error message look more like it comes from your email program (which is ?) rather than mailwasher.
It says 1 of 2 tasks completed successfully, click the Tasks tab and see what tasks were performed ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow mailwasher.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entries for them and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Can you please answer Tech’s questions, some security programs block new start-up entries.

Also, can you Google the keywords 0x800CCC90 and 0x800CCC92 to see if you find any info about the error?

Hi Tech,

Some further information: Symptom
You may get the following error message

* There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected.'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Server: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid user or password', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

solution
Check your Outlook Express settings, making sure that the POP3 and SMTP servers are as in the screenshots, and that your full username and password are correct.

If you are still having problems, it could be that your password has somehow become corrupted. Try changing it in My Account.
