What is a decompression bomb?

Hello, I’m new here and I’ve been using avast for a few months, and I usually do a good scan every week or so. Just today I scanned and it found 3 files that are very similar in file name and all have “Unable to scan: The file is a decompression bomb.” for the result. The file names are:

C:\Emily\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ggowbr9c.default\Cache\BCA62344d01{gzip}
C:\Emily\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ggowbr9c.default\Cache\DB780835d01{gzip}
C:\Emily\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ggowbr9c.default\Cache\FC120747d01{gzip}

I’m not sure what to do - delete them? Are they harmless or should I be alarmed?

Modified: I know what a decompression bomb is, sort of, from reading some other topics, but everyone seems to have different files completely I wanted to know about mine specifically.

Decompression bomb is a file that may be rather small, but decompresses to an enormous amount of data (when processed as a packed archive). Such file are not malicious per se, but they may block an antivirus program when it tries to scan them.
This kind of files is rather hard to detect (and avoid) precisely - so, it is possible that there are some false alarms. It’s not a big problem in this case, however - the “decompression bomb” announcement actually means something like “The file has a very high, maybe even suspicious, compression ratio and the AV is not going to scan the archive content”.

I’d suggest to ignore these files. Don’t worry.

Well if im sure Cache is like Temp and not usefull. I do delete Cache per 2 months because its a piece that take some time a lot space so its good to delete it some times. I do it manually so.

But for sure you could wait for another reply if you feel more secure.

Okay, thanks! I just wanted to be reassured because from looking at other topics, it seems like this is common but since everyone posts completely different file names I didn’t know if mine were harmless too or something to delete.

Well if Firefox is like the other cache. I do delete my cache of my game. Download Content is some time in the cache also or the customer can have a reset of it. But i didnt care because i got a lot space more for my game lol.
