Another thread got me thinking about how Avast handles files that are detected as a virus and that I may need to adjust some settings since Avast has a lot of customization features that need to be set by the user. I’m curious as to the best way to setup Avast to handle viruses automatically upon their detection. I’m open to all ideas as to the best way to handle detection. I know for sure that the detected threat should be quarantined by being sent to the Chest rather than deleting. My initial thought is, at least for the wife’s laptop, is to have Avast to detect it, automatically neutralize the effect of the threat by removing it to the chest, continue with/complete the scan, and alert me to the threat so I can review it later. This approach would seem to avoid the situation where a lot person’s knee jerk reaction is to “delete” the threat right away and I can see my wife doing that – see something bad, get rid of it right away. But, then with false positives and Avast’s slightly higher rate (although not bad by any means), there needs to be some detective work after the threat is found to determine if it is indeed a real virus or just a FP, and if it is sent to the chest right away, then something she is using that depends on that file might become dysfunctional creating confusion and frustration for whoever is using the computer. Suggestions on a good setup of how Avast deals with detected viruses?
I see what you are trying to do. Given the choices avast presents upon detection, the file will not run with any of them. So regardless of what you used, the program the file belongs would not run correctly.
Move-the path would change and the program wouldn’t be able to find it
Delete-the file would be gone
Move to chest-files can’t be accessed or ran there
No action-file would remain in origonal location, but wouldn’t be executed
I think Move to chest would still be the best choice. They are easy to find there and in the case of a valid detection they are all ready stopped from running.
We can’t have it both ways. Either the file is stopped from running or is allowed through the exclution list(s).
Your best course of action, probably would to use the chest and educate your wife on how to research detections. FPs can be easily handled with the exclution list and the restore feature of the chest.
They’re only present on Pro version.
I suggest: Repair Send to Chest Interactive.
Only in Pro version.
In Home version you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” as soon as the first virus warning appears, and click on “No action” button. This way, nothing will be done and you will be presented the results at the end (and you can perform actions from there).
Thanks. I think that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Looks like I need to set this sequence up for each of the “resident scanners” and I assume I should also do the same under Tasks>Scan: local disks? Also, is there a way for the system to email me if a virus is detected and it engages in the automatic fix?
Yes, but let the Resident Protection Task as it is, on Interactive mode.
It’s not wiser to automatically handle the files caught by the resident, imho. You can judge what are you doing in the time the alert appears, etc. Give you more control over your own system.
