What the HECK !!!!!!!! deleting all my mails !!!!!! REALLYYYYYYY !!!!!!

I was checking my mails with thunderbird tonight, and studently thunderbird just yield at me !
“Can’t write mails inside database of your account” … :o

I quit thunderbird thinking of a bad issue inside the software, relaunch it… no more box letter…
I check where the file is stock…

NO MORE FILE!!!
I wonder how it could happen… a file and studently not a file… last jedi?.. black magic power? ssd fault… no it is not a sdd disk… antivirus… avast…

So I check AVAST log, looking for what happen to my lost files… a bit like the serial TV….
AVAST logs → FileSystemShield.txt
“24/04/2018 20:23:35 D:\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\Mail\Local Folders\Boîte de réception.sbd_E-Mails_.sbd\gmail.com [L] HTML:Facebook-A [Phish] (0)
Fichier supprimé avec succès…”
Yyeahhhhh…… whattttt……

yes I’m french… I can translate it for you…

AVAST log: We thought you could be Phish by a fucking email, so to protect you from happing, We delete ALL YOUR MAILSSSSSSSS…

Thx AVAST, I’m safe! Lost just all my data, because I like POP and I thought Avast antivirus would ask If one day it would want to delete my files, just for asking…
At least a dialog to popup to just ask nicely…

“Hey I think someone want to phish you, we are thinking about deleting all your database of mails to protect you, do you want to delete it to be protected?”
Yes
“You sure all the mails”
Noooooo !!!

FOR GOD SAKE, I’m a C++ developer, it is my JOB.
I FUCKING NEVER, NEVER, NEVER DELETE FILES of the user WITHOUT ASKING!!!

Any chance you could do action about it…

I just saw AFTER, default option was, “Fix it automatically”… yeahhhh youpi… hurrayyy, if the file can’t be repair, we try to move it in safe zone… I was thinking, humm ok, so far, so good… If we can’t… we delete the file… WHATTTTT !! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
I was keeping mails from 15 years……

Never got problem until I met AVAST Designer stupidity….

“Designer: Hey dev guys, why ask user before to delete a file, our super engine think it is a perfect match, it is a virus, delete the file without asking! Anyway the user is always stupid, don’t need to ask any questions !!!”:-/

Guys…. It is in the name…. fishing…… facebook…… it was not the virus of the death star which could erase and fry all my data on all my disks……
And by the way the software always fail to update after some time…… whyyyy !

And for all the morons who want to come telling me….
“Why you do not use IMAP idiot !!”
I just say I do use IMAP for some boxes…. And for other box with more sensitive materials I don’t want google to keep them forever online, they already did inaccessible backup anyway!

BTW: I’m not the only one

D:\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\Mail\Local Folders\Boîte de réception.sbd_…

As often written in a german TB-forum it’s not good to store many incoming mails in your inbox. If Avast (or another scan software) detects malware there it can only delete this file or move it to the virus chest. Better store your files to other local folders.

And now, after the inbox is gone, I would restore a backup of this file.

And don’t shout in your title …

Yeah I also think that the “HTML:Facebook-A [Phish]” is super easy to get false positives. I created email newsletter which has facebook in the subject line and it got flagged and deleted by avast. I know that it’s a false positive as I created the email myself and ran it through all kinds of tests with other software before transmission.

ww.whitedragon, you are not the only one: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=218568.0
You wont get ur data back, this bug is most likely not to be fixed as devs dont care.

@stibi: ye, Avast! works smoothly, failing to do basic tasks like moving files into the Virus Chest.

Maybe part of your settings? E.g. settings/components?

If Avast (or another scan software) detects malware there it can only delete this file or move it to the virus chest. Better store your files to other local folders.

If another scan software than avast detects a malware, it first display a dialog to tell the user it just detected a malware, then it ask you what to do !!!
It do not destroy your file without asking… first time I see that in 20 years…

If you have system restore enabled, you may try restoring your thunderbird mail file from volume shadow copy.

Try this guide: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/adioltean/2008/02/28/a-simple-way-to-access-shadow-copies-in-vista/

Dev-Info: The underlying detection (common for all 3 cases) has been updated yesterday so that it shouldn’t happen on Thunderbird mailboxes anymore, and I’ll try to prevent their removal in a generic way in the next few days.

Thx to the dev to take account about it.
It was the aim of my post !

By the way, I use a Thunderbird Portable version.
So there is nothing inside registry files, juste to take account about it too !

I think the Title of this Thread is offensive and totally unnecessary in civil communication.

Agreed, I edited the topic titles in my replies.

I’m not a native english, sorry for the vulgar word, but I can’t find an expression better suiting my sentiment at that time !

I was astonish, shock, incredule…

After trying many softwares to recover the mails, I edit the memory zone in hexa to check the data and I got series of zero ! :-\

Got a backup from 1 month old, but missing 1 months of mails…

“What the” would have done, how about modifying the topic title in your original post.

What the heck would have meant the same.

You should backup your data at least twice a week.

And please - edit your topic …
