Sorry if this seems frivolous but its something I’ve always wondered about… what is the cause of that crunching sound that comes from inside a PC? I have a desktop and a laptop PC. Whenever I ask them to do something - perform a virus scan, open a file, search through folders for a document etc - they get right down to it with a continuous “crunching” sound which slows down or stops once the task is complete. The bigger the task, the more intense and more “crunchy” the sound is. I have looked online and found lots of websites / forums with posts saying this was a sign of imminent disaster, as in “oh my god your PC is going to die and blow up your dog”. But my PCs have always made this sound. My desktop has been making this sound since I bough it in 2007, and its working quite well. My laptop is just 8 months old and seems quite healthy.
Obviously it must be something to do with processing. Right? ???
On the HDD? Is it normal then? I’ve seen some webpages that say the HDD should be almost silent.
My computers are fairly audible (my big desktop more so than my newer laptop).
Yes it’s normal to a certain level and as I mentioned some are noisier than others, quality of the HDD would be a factor as is the sound insulation of the housing.
The tower for my desktop sits under the desk on carpet so its tucked away and being on carpet helps to deaden any noise, my laptops have SSD’s so there is no moving parts with those so no noise
