Version 4.0 was released in December 2003 IIRC.

Actually avast goes back quite a bit farther back than v4, back in the old version-numbering days – I think I started with avast 98, or am I thinking of a totally unrelated computer app (ICQ, maybe?) which also used that v. number?

I understand that Version 4.0 in December 2003 was the first official for all users.

v4 was released in Dec 2002 as the successor to avast32 (released in '95, I guess)
