Although Avast is an “Antivirus”, the lines become a bit blurred these days. An antivirus scanner will stop (hopefully) trojans it detects. And rootkits. And worms. And even viruses. (Collectively the various threats are referred to as “malware”, for “malicious software.”)
Avast is (I believe) as good as any of them in this regard, and a heck of a lot better than some.
What I do, and quite a few other forum members, too, is install a demand antispyware scanner, like MBAM or SAS and carry out demand scans every week (or 3), or whenever there are symptoms of malware on the computer. (If, for example, Avast alerted to malware, wich it then quarantined, it would be a good idea to run a demand scan just to be sure.)
My routine scans never seem to find anything, and that’s how it should be.
Also recommended is a two way firewall, and a practice of making regular backups of important files and settings.
+1
Or ThreatFire as a behavior blocker.
