WHY DO PEOPLE BUY ANTI-VIRUS PACKAGES WHEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE FOR FREE?

I have downloaded free avast home version from the net…I have been using it for about 10 months now, and almost every day the virus database gets updated when I log into the internet… What i want to know is : Is the free home version of Avast as good as the purchase versions of Avast (or any other Anti-Virus ) that is available in the stores? In other words, what I want to know is : If anti-viruses like avast (home version) are available for free on the internet, then why do people take the pains of buying anti-virus packages for home use?

Hi…

The free versions are typically trimmed down “cousins” of the paid versions, usually in the form of reduced functionality and/or options and sometimes include “nag screens” or other advertisements (to encourage you to buy the paid version.) A few exceptions that I’ve seen:

  1. MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials)
  2. Immunet Protect
  3. Panda Cloud Antivirus (I think)

Hope this helps.

God bless

So does it mean that with a free version, my computer will be less protected from viruses than it would be with a paid version?

Hi…

In some cases, yes. Programs that eliminate realtime protection services from their free versions allow a much greater risk of infection if it is being used as the only security solution on the system. It’s always best to use a layered approach with security software, whether paid or free.

God bless

Ok…so what would you suggest finally? I mean which of the following three options will ensure maximum/total security of my computer from viruses?

  1. continue using avast free version

  2. switch to free versions of other anti-viruses like MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) or Immunet Protect

  3. buy an anti-virus from the store

avast free + Malwarebytes PRO (a one time fee for a liftime license ) + outpost firewall free

and these questions should be asked in the general forum…this forum is for virus problems

Hi all…

I would also include SpywareBlaster in addition to what Pondus has suggested above (or whatever software you end up choosing.)

God bless
