Why does AvastSVC.exe stays permanently connected?

At startup Avast checked for updates and makes a few connections. After it is updated it does not close all connection, but stay permanently connected to one.
What is the purpose of that? And can I prevent it?

Stream updates are disabled.

Probably stream updates.

Stream updates are disabled.

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)
  • Which version/build of Avast…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

If you use Web Shield then almost all connections to the Internet will be connected via AvastSvc.exe.

And we have cloud lookup feature on File System Sheild, so cloud query will occur time to time.

Avast is installed without any components (shields, software updater, vpn, cleanups etc.). I ony use the scan function.
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
No other security related software installed.
Defender is disabled.
Avast Free Antivirus ver. 20.2.2401, build 20.2.5130.570

If you want to use Avast as OD-Scanner only, set it to passive mode.

I have selected passive mode.
But AvastSvc.exe still stays permanently connected (to an IP number in the 5.62.53 range).

Did you reboot the system…!?

Yes, I rebooted the Pc.

Beats me, sorry.

Is it possible to be some sort of “undeclared” telemetry???

That is something only Avast can corroborate.

I blocked AvastSvc.exe in the firewall to see what happens: Avast does not update anymore.
Probably AvastSvc.exe keeps the connection alive so it knows when there is an update, instead of checking every so many minutes/hours (which I would prefer).

Normally, Avast updates every 6 min.

“Normally, Avast updates every 6 min.”

That is not true. I have been testing with AvastSvc.exe unblocked in the firewall, but no checking for updates for over an hour.

According to support, Avast Free updates automatically when a new version is available. Hence the permanent connection AvastSvc.exe makes.

Updates every 6 minutes refers to streaming updates. Not progam updates.
