WiFi network name changes when scrolling over

Hello, as the name of the topic says, I am having this issue. I noticed today that when my mouse pointer goes over my WiFi network icon, it shows a different name to that of the network.

The name it shows looks pretty suspicious to me (wW3MDO2) and I had a problem with a trojan virus recently. Could it be that it has actually infected my computer? ???

Thanks a lot.

If you want a malware expert to check then follow instructions > https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

These are the screenshots, the one named Lynksys1q2w… is the actual network name (my home network) and the one at the lower right is the one that shows when I move to pointer over the wifi symbol.

Here are the logs according to the instructions: :o

Need the FRST.txt log file also.

for me when i hover over the wireless icon on the start bar it shows the make and model of my wireless dongle not my router. so my best guess would be the one in the first screenshot is your routers name and the 2nd one is the name given to the network adapter used to connect to the network.

With me the router im connected to listed when i open the connections window is netgear32, but when i hover over the icon i get netgear A6210 which is my USB wireless dongle.

But you should still let dbrisendine check everything out to be safe.

@ dbrisendine,

Thank you very much, here it is.

@Lotan

Thank you, I am at my laptop and my WiFi cards are:

Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)
Intel Centrino Advanced N 6205

FIRST >>>>

Please go to START (Windows Orb) >> Control Panel >> Uninstall a Program or Programs and Features and remove the following (if listed):

Chromium

To do so, left clicking on the name once and then click Uninstall/Change at the bar above the list window.

Follow the prompts of the uninstaller BUT please read carefully any questions it asks before answering; some uninstallers will try and deceive you into keeping the software.

I am sorry for the late response. I had been very busy. I followed the directions and it seems it did not work. I still see that weird name on my wifi icon. I am attaching the Fixlog.txt file as requested.

Thank you very much for your help.

Lateness is never a problem as the real world (work / life) always takes precedence over the PC.

Let’s scan for any leftover malware and then see if a windows repair fixes the network issue.

FIRST >>>>

Thank you so much dbrisendine,

I have followed your directions and I have attached the files. AdwCleaner found 3 threats and it restarted the PC, after that Malwarebytes found nothing, yet I am still seeing the change when i scroll over my wifi icon.

The system is looking very clean so let’s get started on the Network Adapters.

Download NetAdapter Repair from here.

You do not have to install the file but do make sure that to start the program you right click on the downloaded file and select “Run as Administrator”.

Once this is open, check that the Network Adapter is set to Wi-Fi.
Select (check) the following:

[]Release and Renew DHCP Address
[
]Clear Host File
[]Clear Static IP Settings (enable DHCP)
[
]Change to Google DNS
[]Flush DNS Cache
[
]Clear ARP/Route Table <Note: Restart Needed to Complete the Reset Process>
[]NetBIOS Reload and Release
[
]Internet Options - Clear SSL State
[]Enable LAN Adapters
[
]Enable Wireless Adapters
[]Reset Internet Options Security/Privacy
[
]Set Network Windows Services Default <Note: Restart Needed to Complete Repair>

Click Run all Selected and follow the prompts. Some of the repairs will ask you to restart your computer.
A log file will be produced in the same directory as the program is run from ( entitled netadpter-log-date&time.txt ).

Done!

(Problem persist, I still see wW3MDO2 as I scroll over my wifi icon). Log attached.

Thanks again dbrisendine

What should the name be? Do you remember?

Please run a search with FRST.

  • Right click on FRST on your desktop and select “Run as Administrator…” When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Type wW3MDO2;wW3MD02 into the Search Box.
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • It will produce a log called SearchReg.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log file back here.

Yes, the name should be “Linksys1q”.

Log attached.

OK, here we go.

What is the WiFi Network name now?

Hi!

I applied the solution, twice, to no avail. Attached please find the Log. I am having lots of problems with my computer. It’s getting too slow. I am planning to reinstall windows, perhaps this will help.

My fault on the Fixlist.txt; a typo made it useless. This Fixlist.txt is correct; please run it first and then we need a fresh FRST scan logs.
