Will Avast Free Edition cure MW97 on Microsoft Word Documents for Mac ?????

Old thread here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57274.msg487558#msg487558

No answers. Avast detected this abnormality, but using the REPAIR or the MOVE (and rename) did absolutely nothing. Files are still infected

How may one CURE/HEAL these files ?

Is the paid version of Avast required ?

I tried iAntiVirus, but it didn’t detect the infection. Most other anti-virus programs did detect the infection as shown in upload and scan website http://r.virscan.org

Must these infections be repaired on my Win7 i7 PC tower, then brought back to the Mac platform ?

HELP !!!

Is the paid version of Avast required ?
nope

could you post the link to the virscan result ?..or better, rescan it at VirusTotal.com and post that link

SCAN: http://r.virscan.org/report/9d9775ddbb26d64655a9bc05691d658b.html

SCAN (Virus Total per your request): https://www.virustotal.com/file/faed752a7552ccf488f00b6c5ddad5bf8fe9db0cf435da7d5cc4f3241a2caa0a/analysis/1330032925/

The file name had “FIXED” added because it was thought that Avast Free Edition repaired the file. It obviously did not. Mail servers reject the file if attached to e-mail, acknowledging the infection.

Scan with antivirus software

Virus:W97M/Thus.FP infects document files and templates used on an infected computer. To clean these files, you must run a full-system scan with an up-to-date antivirus product. Several companies provide antivirus software for this purpose. For more information, see -http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/vista.mspx.

found this…if it helps

Killing Word Macro Virus (W97M.Thus.A) On MacOS X

Yes, thank you. But my main question is why can’t Avast repair the infected files ?

I do not think that any AV can cure these files as the malware is within the body. Deletion would be the only option

Thank you. These are on a Macintosh. My PC tower deleted or quarantined the files, rendering them useless. However, I did find a Mac anti-viral program other than Avast, and that did remove the viruses and preserved the file integrity. It’s free to download and update and run. SOPHOS.

After using “SOPHOS”, which works on 10.4.11 OS and higher, Avast did not detect the viruses.

Yipppppeeeee !

(But I still want to know why Avast Free Edition did not work)
