Win32: Bamital-X .... This threat is giving me problems... please help.

  • I recently got a bunch of viruses on my computer after a nephew of mine was trying to download he says “movie clips and free games”. No big deal I think since I was under the impression I was somewhat savvy and have eliminated a lot of lame viruses.

  • I was wrong, I had the crappy iolo system shield on the desktop, and it only found 1 virus. And this was after several threats had removed my restore points and could not even restore from boot screens. Anyway, I downloaded avast free antivirus and it restored function to my computer. I could then at least access task manager etc.

  • I did a boot scan and the same result occurs. 3 infected files all with the same “Win32: Bamital-X” threat.

  • The scan results look like this

File Severity Status Action Result

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe High Threat: Win32: Bamital-X move to chest Error: the specified file is read only(6009)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlongon.exe High Threat: Win32: Bamital-X move to chest Error: the specified file is read only(6009)

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe High Threat: Win32: Bamital-X move to chest Error: the specified file is read only(6009)

  • The computer functions right now, but occasionally upon loading up web browser and/or upon startup “Avast” blocks the “Bamital” virus trying to execute.

  • Can someone please instruct me on how to remove this? I would like to not have to re-install windows etc. And I have no restore points beyond the day the viruses infected me sadly.

OK lets try this to fix it - two programmes to run.

First the hammer and then a look for remnants. This malware has patched two system files that Avast cannot remove due to them being rather vital

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

[*]Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]As part of it’s process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it’s strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

[*]Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

[*]Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

[*]When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
[*]Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them if you need to start a new topic.

  • Ran the combo fix and attached the log. Sadly ran avast scan again and the bamital-x is not gone. I knew this also immediately after combo fix restarted my computer and avast had restarted and immediately blocked the bamital loading.

  • Also worth noting was after combofix produced the log. I had nothing but a wallpaper to look at , no taskbar or desktop. I could however use task manager and restarted from there to find avast blocking the bamital.

  • Should I bother using the “OTL” if the combofix didnt catch the bamital? or did the fact that I restarted after log was produced from task manager mean combofix wasnt completed properly?

Combofix did not get it on the first round - so let round two commence

  1. Please open Notepad
    [*] Click Start , then Run[*]Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

  2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Fcopy:: c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\winlogon.exe|c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\explorer.exe|c:\windows\explorer.exe

File::
c:\windows\system32\debevoru.exe
c:\windows\system32\fetemozu.dll
c:\windows\system32\powajoze.exe
c:\windows\system32\yitosuta.exe

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Kumi\Local Settings\Application Data\uoydnhitb

  1. Then in the text file go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES

  2. Save the above as CFScript.txt

  3. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

  1. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    [*]Combofix.txt [*]A new OTL log.
