Win32:Crypt-RQA[Trj]

Hi.
So a few days ago when I was doing an Avast scan, Win32:Crypt-RQA[Trj] came up associated with a Data base file (whatever that means, but Avast said it was associated with C:\System Value Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB). I was unable to delete the file, repair it, or quarantine. However, strangely, it hasn’t come up in a scan again. What’s been happening is that it came up and I tried to quarantine it. That seemed to fail so I ran a boot-time scan. After that, the scan came up clean for a couple of days, but now the same virus is back again-- or at least it was this morning. In scans that I’ve done since then, nothing has come up. I don’t know why this would be or if the virus is really gone or not and I have no idea how to tell.
I also ran a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan and it brought up some things, but I don’t think they brought up the Win32:Crypt-RQA[Trj]. I’ve attached that log.
Since the virus seemed to come back before (or maybe it was never really fixed), I want to make sure it won’t come back again and that it isn’t lurking in some file somewhere, but I have no idea how to do that.

Thanks!

C:\System Value Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB).
you mean C:\System [b]Volume [/b]Information\ .... ?

see instructions here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
scroll down to Farbar Recovery Scan Tool… run as instructed and attach the two diagnostic logs

a log expert will check it tomorrow

I did mean System Volume Information. Sorry about that!

I’ve attached the two diagnostic logs.

Thank you so much!

I will tidy up first and then we will purge system restore

Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/FRSTfix.JPG

Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

[*]Close all open programs and internet browsers.
[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.
[*]Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Ok. So I ran Fix on FRST and ran the AdwCleaner scan. I’ve attached those logs.

Just out of curiosity, what does purging system restore mean? And if we purge system restore, will the computer make a new restore point in the future, after everything is clean?

Yes when I tidy up all old restore points are deleted an a new one is created, windows will produce the normal restore points

How is the computer behaving now ?

Normally. Everything seems to be running smoothly. Should I run a scan to see if anything comes up?

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/javara.JPG

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/CryptoPrevent.JPG

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Unchecky

Click on the link above to be taken to Unchecky.com
click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Hey,

So I’ve installed Cryptoprevent (haven’t installed Unchecky yet)-- but while I was doing that, I ran an Avast scan and it brought up the same Win32:Crypt-RQA[Trj] that it was before. What do I do?

Did you run delfix and tick purge restore points ?

I did. Should I do it again?

That is because Norton is still running

Download and run the Norton removal tool from here https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Once done run delfix again to purge the restore points

Ok. I’ve removed Norton and run Delfix again.
I also ran an Avast scan and nothing came up. However, since the Win32:Crypt-RQ[Trj] has only shown up in scans sporadically (that is, since it will sometimes show up and then two or three scans will be clean, and then it will show up again), I’m still worried that it will turn up again…

I doubt it as Avast was alerting on Norton definitions within system restore

Good to know. I’ll just keep an eye on it then and if it turns up again, I’ll just post back here.

Thank you so much for your help! You’re really a lifesaver!

My pleasure
