I managed to get rid of the stuff following your instructions. My kids are using MessPlus and I realise this is a potential risks.
But how can I make it difficult for malware to enter or how can I detect it in much earlier stages. I now suddenly can browse much faster and even access sites that were not accessible before because of “timeout”.
Which programs should I use? I am still running the free Ad-Aware and Ewido. Is that sufficient?
First and foremost, make sure you run XP with the latest patches and keep the software updated (XP Service Pack2). Use minimal rights (Drop your admin’s rights) whenever there is no need for special actions a download or an update, especially for other users that use the computer. Use ONLY one resident AV software, the same with a software firewall, like for instance ZA.
Install Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, Ewido. Use one of the alternate browsers, have the Webshield running inside (see Avast homepage for instruction),
Instruct your kids on the use of DrWeb pre-hyperlink scanner plug-in, install siteadvisor, and tell them what this about, simply green is safe, other colours one click away from malware. If you use an alternate browser make it more safe where you use Firefox or Flock to install NoScript, Adblock Plus. Scan your computer once a fortnight with an online browser, like Bitdefender, and an online Adware, Spyware scanner like spyaudit. These are some basic assumptions for everyone, even a 6-year old can learn. Security is more of an attitude than that it is a science.
