win32;dropper.gen and rundll32.exe

Dear Avast,

A shop(!!) installed Windows XP on a friend’s computer with a virus. The virus was win32;dropper.gen, and it affected the rundll32.exe.

On startup Avast found the virus but gave a message that the threat had been removed - yet it kept coming back. It then gave a choice to run a bootscan but that didn’t remove the virus. In fact it wasn’t removed and when I did a bootscan in safe mode it found the virus but gave a read error when I tried to fix it. Eventually I used Emsisoft and it removed the rundll32.exe.

That is the stage I am at now. XP runs, I think the system is virus-free, my friend can use the internet but I cannot access the control panels.

I might also have a USB drive problem, and I am unable to install camera software.

MAIN TOPIC PROBLEM - I want to copy the rundll32.exe file into windows/system32 and register it.

A friend has given me a copy of windows XP but when I run it it requires burnsetup. I am not used to these “burn-setup” approaches, normally I buy the DVD and install. All I want is the rundll32.exe file.

Can you help?

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ

Good Day!

Go Here

Download and Run in ordered list: Malwarbytes, OTL, aswMBR (Windows 7 ONLY!!)

Attach the following log files in your next reply.

  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
  • aswMBR.txt
  • Malwarebytes.txt

Michael,

Thanks read this just before I posted - after all the work.

I ran MBAM , adware cleaner and aswmbr already - as well as esmisoft.

I have found a rundll32.exe file and will try again tomorrow.

If I have not been successful I will follow the pinned approach. Unless it would help you for other reasons to see the logs.

Thanks for the reply.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ

The logs will tell us anything wrong with your computer that vwould indicate malware/viruses. I’d recommend you attach them
