My wife’s favorite game is an old “Sierra Card Games 2004”. She has played the games for years, on many different computers (all Windows). That disc has been used many times. Today, 10/31/2011, Avast! free version 6.0.1289 decided that the “HoyleCardGames2004.exe” file harbored “Win32:Malware-gen” and took the file to the “Virus Chest”. Without that file, the game will not run. I have been using Avast! for a couple of years now and am really satisfied with the program.
I found a work around for the problem by using the “Exclusion” feature in the “File System Shield, Expert settings” section.
Now, here is my question: Can there be any future problems with this? Apparently, (A reasonable guess), the latest virus update triggered the problem. She has played the game, with Avast! running, for years. What changed?
upload suspicious file(s) to www.virustotal.com and test with 43 malware scanners
when you have the result, copy the url in the address bar and post it here for us to see

Please create your own new topic, here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=4.0 in the viruses and worms forum (click the New topic button at the top of the page see image) and we will try and help you there.
Give details of the detection, file name, location and malware name.
Send the sample to avast as a False Positive:
Open the chest and right click on the file and select ‘Submit to virus lab…’ complete the form and submit, the file will be uploaded during the next update. A link to this topic wouldn’t hurt.

In the meantime (if you accept the risk, seems you already have), add the full path to the file to the exclusions lists (see Note below): File System Shield, Expert Settings, Exclusions, Add and avast Settings, Exclusions
Restore it to its original location, periodically check it (scan it in the chest), there should still be a copy in the chest even though you restored it to the original location. When it is no longer detected then you can also remove it from the File System Shield and avast Settings, exclusions lists.
Note: When using the Browse button it only goes down to folder level accept that. Now open the entry in the exclusions and change the * to \file_name.exe where file_name.exe is the file you want to exclude.
