I’m new to this website and am not sure how I should proceed to fix my machines. Two days ago opened a pdf file on the netgear.com website and a minute later an avast pop-up box appears notifying me of a potential malware threat and to run a boot time scan which I performed immediately. Strangely, I went to a different machine#2 (while the scan was being peformed on machine#1) booted up machine#2 and once I logged in, the same avast pop-up box for potential malware threat appeared, so I executed a boot time scan on machine#2. Earlier that day received a pop-up box on machine#1 to update MS office 2010 which I answered yes to. During the scan of both machines deleted any files that avast identified as containing viruses. Both machines are on the same router.
Results of boot time scan
machine#1: identified 3 files status (threat: Win32:Malware-gen) and a file in the virus chest (Win32:Malware-gen)
machine#2: identified 6 files (5 threat:Win32:Malware-gen; 1 threat:Win32:Hupigon-ONX[Trj]) and a file in the virus chest (Win32:Evo-gen[Susp])
ran a subsequent boot time scan on both machines and both returned with no viruses found. Does that mean both machines are clean? Do I need to run additional programs to ensure the safety on the two machines? Was it just a coincidence that they both received the alert or did machine#1 infect machine#2?
Any help would be appreciated. Would like to ensure it is safe to use these machines?
