Win32:Malware-gen

Scanned pc with avast! and it detected some generic malware attached to “C:\CMPNENTS\MEDIACTR\I386\PLUS.CAB\AudioConverter.exe”

Hell if I know what it is, I think it might be a false positive, but I do have 2 Audio converters on my pc, but I dunno where that file originated from as I have never heard of it before, I think it might have been a family member installing something onto the computer in my absence.

OS: Windows XP Media Centrer Edition 2002 Service Pack 2

The file originated from … C drive … CMPNENTS = components … MEDIACTR = Media Center … which is the version of Windows XP you have.

So, the file is a part of the audio converter included with XP Media Center. I am guessing that this is a false positive. I suggest that you send the file to avast for analysis with the subject as “Possible False Positive.”

Alrighty thanks, I had a slight feeling it was a FP. ^.^

I forgot to add send the file to virus@avast.com

Oh, I sent it through the option in avast! its self, is that still okay or should I do it with the email address?

I would say submitting through the avast UI is preferable as a) you don’t have to zip and password protect the sample and b) I believe there is a degree of automation on the other end of the UI submission (which can’t be done with password protected zip file samples).
