win32:opas-f & win32:opas-s

My pc (windows ME) has the two subject viruses. Avast detects it and I follow the instructions that pop up to remove it but later Avast finds it again. Any suggestions?

Turn off system restore/disable all shared files/empty all temp folders-reboot into safe-mode and then clean
post back with results

Hi Ratfink!

Please ensure you have done a thorough scan with avast!, preferably a boot time scan. (This doesn’t work in Win 98: if you have this OS, boot into safe mode before scanning- hit F8 while booting.)

Right click the avast! globe and select Start avast! Antivirus.

avast! will do a memory scan: if it find the worm in memory, it will prompt you to do a boot time scan: accept this and reboot.

If avast! doesn’t find anything in memory, schedule a boot time scan. (Click the button at the top left of the avast! silver console and select Schedule boot time scan from the drop-down menu.)

The anti-Trojan program Ewido is also worth installing and running as a double check: it has a free version:

http://www.ewido.net/en/

Please ensure that you have a firewall and that your OS is up to date, otherwise infections will come back. Free firewalls are available for home uses.

If you need advice on either of these subjects, please say so.

If you are new to computer security, I also suggest a thorough spyware scan with at least the first two of these scanners:

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Webroot Spy Sweeper: (Free working trial) http://www.download.com/Webroot-Spy-Sweeper/3000-8022_4-10373771.html
MS AntiSpyware: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en
Yahoo! Anti-Spy: http://toolbar.yahoo.com/
X-Cleaner Free: http://www.xblock.com/download-freeware.php

If you still experience problems, please run HijackThis and post a log file:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial42.html

Where does avast! detect the worm?
To clean it, you can use the avast! Virus Cleaner. However, you should make sure you have Microsoft security patches installed and that your shared drives have a good password - otherwise Opas may come back.

Thanks very much for your advice.

The infected computer is windows ME Home, with all security patches installed. I had to start it in safe mode to run a boot time scan. It is running right now.

I have a router which should act as a firewall. I frequently run adaware and spybot S&D.

I will install and run ewido also.

thanks again!

Here is the log generated by Hijack This…

Please let me know if I need to make any changes to remove the win32:opas worm.

Thanks very much!

Hi Ratfink,

This is a reference to your worm/virus. I think avast has deleted the actual files, but you should run HijackThis again, check the box next to this item and click ‘fix’. As the files themselves are gone, there should be no problem deleting this.

F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\SCRSVR.EXEc:\windows\scrsvr.exe,c:\windows\natal.scr

Also fix these entries because they are empty:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O18 - Protocol: relatedlinks - {5AB65DD4-01FB-44D5-9537-3767AB80F790} - (no file)

You may want to fix this item because WildTangent is Adware:

O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} - http://install.wildtangent.com/bgn/partners/shockwave/excavation/install.cab

http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=733

All other items seem to be legitimate and you should leave them unless you have reason to remove them.

A software firewall is still recomended even behind a router: I recommend Kerio, which works well with avast! and blocks web intrusions which will pass straight through you router.

FF

Edit: Fixer, you can very easily check O16 entries with SpywareBlaster: open the program and select ‘Internet Explorer’. Right click on the list of items and select ‘Find’. Copy the CLSID number from the entry into the find dialogue box: if it’s in the list, it’s a nasty.

Hi Frank!

Thanks again for your advice. I ran Hick This and did the fixes you recommended.

I will set up a software firewall also.

I seem to remember that I read in the ED2K forums that some TCP ports commonly used in ED2K may be subject to attacks by viruses or worms. Have you heard of this?

I really appreciate all your help!

Maybe this might be useful??

http://www.emule-help.com/firewalls.htm

(I think emule is related to edonkey, isn’t it?)

After I did the fixes with Hijack this I left the PC connected to the internet. ED2K was not running. after about an hour or less avast found 2 more win32:opas viruses.

Does the resident protection feature of avast find viruses as soon as the appear on my pc, or is there some lag time while it scans?

Were these viruses kilely already on my PC or were they recently downloaded?

Thanks!
