well i there was that virus in a file (win32 trojan generic VC) i have downloaded with a p2p program , Avast warned me about that but couldn’t heal it , put it in quarantine and coucln’t even delete it… ???..Well what i did was to delete it by myself but it sux to see that Avast couldn’t do anything about it
Seems to me that avast did something about if it was put into the Chest (quarantine). It is not wise to delete a file right away. A file in the Chest can do no harm. It is best to leave it in the Chest for a week or 2 before deleting it.
I checked in the chest and the virus isn’t there
My mistake … I guess I misinderstood your post. :-[
hmmm…no my mistake. ;D …English is not my primary language so… :
but still i don’t undertsamd why Avast couldn’t delete the file , nor put it in the chest or heal it…I had to delete it myself (it was in a rar archive)
i changed my Avast configuration when it’s time to know what to do when a virus is found and then did a test with the eicar virus (false one as u know) …so i changed my configuration like this
first action : put the file in quarantine (chest)
second action : fix it or clean it (i’m not sure about the exact cause i’m using the french version , reparer in french)
third action : delete it
so i,ve downloaded the eicar virus test file and took a look at how Avast would react
what it did was to put the file in quarantine (chest) that was the first action i choose
Now i have 3 questions :
1- Is my configuration when i find a virus , i mean first put in in the chest followed by cleaning it and then delete it is right ? what i mean is , is it better to clean it first and then delete it and put the file in the chest if the 2 first actions coudln’t be done
2- May I repair the file in the chest, or rename it or is the delete option the only one i have there ?
3- why is it better to delete infected files in the chest after about 2 weeks and not now ?
Thanks for your kind answers as always…
Note, I’m not an avast Pro user so I’m not fully aware of the choices available to you in the Pro version.
I would have thought that the first action would be:
- attempt a repair
- send to chest
- rename (if that is an option) or any other option available to you with the absolute last option to delete.
However, if you get down to this last option (3. or below) it is likely it is because the file is in use or in one of the system folders and as such protected by windows. In this case nothing may work so you may have to schedule a boot-time scan to be able to deal with the problem before windows starts.
Files in the chest can be scanned again and if still detected as a virus, etc. then I believe if the virus was one that could be repaired that option should be available.
I’ll choose: repair (if fails) chest (if fails) interative
I think this is useful (you can repair first) and safer (do not automatically delete a file without your knowleage).
You can’t repair a file into the chest. You need to restore it first. Of course, I won’t do it as it’s infected.
Only executable files could be repaired after all…
It’s safer: it could be a false positive (false detection), you may need that file (even infected) to your system work, etc.
Two weeks is a period to be ‘sure’ the file is not necessary and really infected
thank you guys
