Windows 10 issue: cannot use, uninstall or install newer compatible version!?

A few months ago, I purchased Windows 7 Home Edition on special and upgraded from XP. I then allowed the free migration to Windows 10. I have since been getting a pop-up window entitled “AVAST Upgrade utility” inviting me to “Complete Windows 10 update - Install the latest version of Avast antivirus to keep your PC protected.” and gives me the “update avast antivirus now” button.

I tried, but then get the error message “This app can’t run on this PC” explaining that “Avast! Antivirus doesn’t work on this version of Windows. Click to learn more.” When it do, it redirects me to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/incompatible-app-windows-10 explaining that “Your app doesn’t work with Windows 10 - The app you’re trying to use was blocked from opening because it might damage your PC or result in loss of data. This is because some apps that worked with a previous version of Windows might not work in the same way with Windows 10. - Go to the support website for the app developer, and check if a new or updated version of this app is available for Windows 10.”

I have tried to execute the latest version of Avast compatible with Windows 10 from their website, but then the same error message occurs. Same thing when I try to delete the app from the Programs and Features.

When I use Cortana to search, it doesn’t even come up as an installed program.

I am stuck, since I cannot use, delete, nor install the new version. What do I do? It was working fine even on Windows 7 before migrating and I cannot find any fixes on the net.

I am using Windows 10 Home, copyrighted 2015 by Microsoft and it is activated.

Thanks!

The problem is likely a crippled OS because you went from XP to W7 and than to W10.
Check if for all hardware W10 drivers exist.
If there are rivers for everything…

 • Perform a clean installation of W7 (including all drivers that the system needs).
 • Perform the upgrade to W10 (check if all drivers are installed)
 • Install the latest avast version.

Hi MissGen

You may try to reinstall Avast from this link. https://www.avast.com/en-gb/compare-antivirus. You can either use the free or use trial version for other core products of Avast. Those software are compatible with windows 10. In any case that you still have issues on installing them, you may also try to call Microsoft to be assisted on reinstalling your Operating system.

Also If get the ISO for Windows 10 10586 1511, you can also input your Windows 7 Key During the Install, though since you already upgraded to Windows 10, can be clean installed without reinstalling Windows 7, and should reactivate autoly since you should have Digital Entiltement already, option 2 is just entering your Windows 7 Product Key if doesn’t autoly activate after the install, (that Is allowed since November update to Windows 10)

Have you tried a clean install of Avast : https://goo.gl/4Ptzkf
After a clean install you shouldn’t have any problems upgrading to Windows 10.

Is this a 32 bit system or 64 bit ???

I just had this same problem on a 32 bit system after updating to the latest insider preview build of Windows 10.
Doing a repair of Avast and then rebooting the system took care of the problem.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

Thanks,
I would still try a repair. I had no problems when updating 2 64 bit systems :o

You’re welcome Bob.
As we heard nothing from the OP yet, I’d suggest to wait…
