So, by now everyone has heard of the issues because of this update. I have already uninstalled the update because my computer was acting strangely. But I heard that Avast did release an emergency update for it. Anyway I think I did update Avast before the first time I installed the Windows update. However my computer still froze every now and then and did something wierd. After the uninstall of the Windows update I ran the emergency update manually and nothing happened. It did clearly run it but nothing visual showed up. So the problem is that should I update Windows again and would it work now? It was a lot of work to even start my PC after the Windows update so that’s why I’m worried to do it again.

Thanks! I have already read the first one, but the second one is new for me. So anyway, does this mean that it’s safe to update back to the new version?
You’re welcome. No idea (yet), we need info/input from the devs…
Alright so before we get new info, I’m just gonna keep it uninstalled.
After installing the update KB4493509, I restarted my computer and the message “Working on updates. 100% complete. Don’t turn off your computer” appeared. It stuck at this screen for over three hours. I forced shut down my computer and the situation remained the same. System restore and startup repair didn’t fix the problem. After restarting several times, the message “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don’t turn off your computer” appeared. I waited for six hours and restarted my computer. The message reappeared, and after a while, I could log in.
I checked the update history and found the problem arose from KB4493509, as evidenced by the message "Last failed install attempt on 10-Apr-19 - 0x800f0920”. I’m using Windows 10 Home x64 and Avast Free Antivirus on a laptop. The failure likely resulted from a conflict between Avast Free Antivirus and KB4493509.
I hid KB4493509 from Windows Update as a temporary fix. Now I can use my laptop as usual. As this update includes security updates, I would appreciate it if it could be installed asap.
Hope the Avast team can fix the problem soon. Many thanks in advance.
Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure if the emergency update solves the issue with KB4493509 in Windows 10. Still worried about potential problems when installing the update.
We haven’t observed any conflicts/slowdowns between KB4493509 and Avast. Emergency update was released for different KBs (Win7/Win8.1).
For what it’s worth. I have Win10 1809 and KB4493509 update installed since April 10. Using Avast free AV 19.4.2374 (build 19.4.4318.451) defs 190416-2. I have not seen any issues.
So is it now safe to install the windows 10 update?
Personally Avast (pk Reply # 8 above) has said it should be OK and rocksteady hasn’t had any issue with it.
That said MS are having another stab at the last April Patch Tuesday, https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10-and-windows-7-cumulative-updates-released-with-fixes/.
My faith in Microsoft’s ability to patch and or deliver Version updates has taken a serious knock. Trust is hard to get and easy to lose. The big problem is the end user has little control of what is updated and when until the new windows update settings become available. Supposedly in a patch before the delivery of windows version 1903.
The Bleeping computer article says that it will not resolve the problems with the antivirus software. I’m also wondering that how can i do the emergency updates. I have tried to run them manually but as my first post says nothing visual showed up. I also heard that the emergency update is a scheduled task which will run itself a few times a day, so it would have happened anyway. Is Avast even supposed to notify me, when an emergency update has been installed?
Yes it might well say that but what it doesn’t do is say which AVs are still effected.
What has been said in this topic is this particular KB.
The Emergency Update was to apply a fix for those KBs (and OSes) that were effected.
The Emergency Update ‘check’ scheduled task check for the presence of an Emergency Update and if present applies it. There is no specific notification that an Emergency Update has been applied.
Ok. I think I’ll just risk it.
I installed the Windows update and I didn’t have any probelms for now. I turned Avast protections off for the installation though so I dont know if that matters.
Thanks for the feedback.
