I don’t know if this is an avast issue or windows 11 but I’d ask here.
On windows 11, a fresh install, not an upgrade, it keeps downloading the “security intelligence updates for microsoft defender antivirus” every so many hours. I thought this was weird seeing that, that specific part should be disabled by avast.
I tried windows 10 again to see if the same thing happens. And I was right that this doesn’t happen in 10.
I figure this only happens on a fresh install and not an upgrade because the upgrade copies the registry and a lot of things from 10.
Avast doesn’t disable Windows Defender.
The Operating system does that to avoid conflict when you install another third party antivirus such as Avast or any other.

Windows Defender is still a part of the Operating System, when a third party antivirus is installed only the active On-Access part of Defender is disabled. You can still run periodic on-demand Windows Defender scans. To do that it would also require updating its virus signatures.
Fresh as in a clean install of windows 11, formatted etc.

But to do those periodic scans, one needs to manually activate it. Which it isn’t.
This does not happen on 10, like as soon as avast is installed. It stops the updates for the defender. I wasn’t sure if this was an avast thing or windows thing generally.
But I assume that’s a Microsoft thing they changed I suppose.
Did you know that there are ways to disable Windows Defender and Windows Upadat updates.
It is not recommended, but if you always plan to update it periodically it can be of great value. If you want to know, just tell me, I’m here. hugs friend.

Don’t exactly want to disable defender completely or updates. It’s something that I noticed a difference between 10 and 11.
One would think 11 would act like 10 on that regard and prevent the intelligence updates when a 3rd party AV was installed and if the periodic defender isn’t enabled. From what I’ve seen 11 doesn’t seem to care and keep downloading the updates whenever a new batch of definitions are released.
But as the other poster said, that’s on windows’ side.
I really agree, I thought WIN 11 should be the same as WIN10. But as you said, it keeps downloading and it’s really complicated. I can’t talk much about Win11 because I use Win10.

Is this specifically for Windows 11? Because that hasn’t been my experience on Windows 10 or older versions of Windows each time I have installed Avast. It has always disabled it for me. There is the option in the Windows Security Center to turn on periodic quick scanning from Defender, but Real Time protection and Controlled folder access are off and not possible to turn on.
When I say that it works well, it means that here with me it is working well on my Windows 10.
Avast does not disable it here. who is in charge of my computer in security and avast.

So you’re Windows Defender is running in real time? That shouldn’t be the case with Avast or any other antivirus if you’re using it, was my understanding. Having two AV programs running at once isn’t good.
Attached a screenshot for you of what mine looks like.
I figure it should be the same as windows 10 considering that the periodic scan if off by default once another anti virus is installed. Hence the definition updates would not be downloaded like in windows 10.
Seems like it’s a windows 11 bug? Considering I asked some people around, one used AVG and the other avira. And they’re both running windows 11 and both download the definitions for defender as well.
From what I can gather it’s something that windows 11 isn’t disabling correctly. Windows 10 works fine.
I guess it depends on if you consider it a ‘bug’ to have periodic scanning on by default. I personally like having periodic scanning on as an automatic second opinion, but I understand others might find it to be overkill.
It is quite considerable, a second opinion.
As I use Windows 10 I don’t have this problem. But if I were using Windows 11 I wouldn’t want this process to be active in the background.
A second opinion that I use here on my machine is Malwarebytes.
Windows defender periodic scanning is not on by default when you install another AV. Last I checked, it is off. It would make sense to download the definitions if it was on.
