Windows 7 problem with right click operation

I am (was) running avast free on windows 7 (64 bit). On startup, if any icon is right clicked on the desktop, I get the working circle indefinitely and to get out I stop Windows explorer, refresh explorer and then right click operation works fine. Happens on every startup even with all programs and unnecessary processes stopped (msconfig). When Avast is disabled on startup or starting in safe mode (avast disabled) right click operation is fine. The version of Avast is about 9 months old but is updated (virus database and program) regularly. I have used Avast free very successfully on my Vista 64 and XP32 machines and was(am) mystified by this glitch on my W7 64 machine? Any suggestions as in the interim I have switched to AVG free which doesn’t have the right click problem on startup.

It was Avast 4.8?

Change to avast 5 free - it’s running perfectly on my Win7 x64 system.

So you don`t have the new avast 5.0 ?

Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.462 http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

Make sure to clean up all AVG remains. They maybe have a removal tool.
For the former 4.8, use the removal tool from my signature to clean up before you install Avast 5.

Thanks …switching to version 5 fixed the problem.

so it had to do with the context menu “scan with…” element from Avast 4 I suppose…

But don’t forget to clean the system for AVG remains…
