Windows 7 won't boot, aswrvrt.sys

Recently my computer has been unable to boot as it freezes on the Windows startup screen. I’ve reviewed many of the posts on this forum related to this problem and have spent days trying to fix this issue without success.

I have tried running the Windows Repair Console - Startup Repair. I have used the command prompt to rebuild bcd, fixboot, and fixmbr. I have also followed the instructions using the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool, which I have attached the FRST.txt file.

Any assistance in resolving this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This will disable both Comodo and Avast let me know if it cures it

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press FIX
On completion try a reboot

I also just ran the OTL scan and have attached those txt files.

I should note that the OTL scan searched my E:\ drive which is the system drive on my PC. However, it is my laptop drive that has the startup issues and is labeled the C:\ drive. So, essentially, I think the OTL scan searched the working drive and not the attached drive with the startup issues. I’d certainly defer to instructions on the Custom Scan box to paste instructions to search the attached drive. Thanks.

I will try the fix.txt document and will return with any updates.

Unfortunately OTL is not designed to scan slave drives… What error do you get when you try to boot the sick system

If I try to start during safe mode, it freezes at aswrvrt.sys, otherwise a normal boot freezes at the windows startup screen as the windows logo begins to appear. Sometimes it just states a Windows failed to start and offers the usual options of safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, Last Good Configuration, and Start Windows Normally.

Since you ran the fixlist has the safe mode start changed to a different file ?

No, still freezes at the same file, aswrvrt.sys.

Did you run FRST when the drive was slaved ? If so it will again only look at the active drive

No, I’m pretty sure I disconnected the working system drive in this case.

Hmm as the fixlist should have removed all service/driver keys for Avast

Could you run a fresh FRST

Essexboy, I have attached both the fresh FRST file, and also the fixlog file. Thanks for all the attention and assistance in this matter.

Hmm I appear to have missed a service … Sorry

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix
Once done try a reboot

Essexboy, I ran a fresh FRST and applied the fix. When I rebooted, the computer froze at the same spot. I have attached the latest FRST.txt file.

I am baffled now as there are no active Avast drivers/services present in the log on the system

From the recovery console have you tried a system restore ?

I did attempt a system restore previously but I do not recall why that did not work. I attempted a system restore now and received an error message that windows installation cannot be found. At startup it indicates an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data. File: \boot\bcd. I know c:\windows exists. Should I try SFC /scannow?

I’m updating that PC now recognize windows installation, but when I try SFc scan now, it indicates a system repair is pending and requires reboot to complete. I’ve rebooted several times now.

Have you run chkdsk /r on the system ?

Yes a few times. Sometimes it has found errors, sometimes it hasn’t.

OK one final shot we will restore the registry to the last successful boot

Download the attached fixlist to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press FIX

I will continue looking if this fails but the options are now becoming limited

Essexboy, how about an attempt to repair the boot config data ?
