There aren’t any threats, support for win9x, winME was meant to have ended over a year ago.
What is giving it life blood is 4.8 is still supported for the business range of avast products (avast 4 server, ADNM, etc.) don’t currently support the new avast AV versions. When the new updates to these Business products are widely used the new versions of avast AV will be supported.
So as that progresses apace there will be less and less 4.8 share and it will have life support turned off.
Those basically are my best guess as to the reasons why win98 is still supported, not by design, but a fortunate circumstance. But this isn’t something that you can count on lasting for a long time, enjoy it whilst it lasts and do some forward planning (finding a new AV, upgrade your OS or system, etc.).
Use Kernelex, then you can install Avast 5/6 onto your Windows 98 ;D
Kernelex works wonders for installing things on Windows 98 that were meant to be installed on systems such as me/2000/xp ( it says it has vista program installing support, but I don’t believe that…)
Give it a shot ! I am not sure how fast it will run though after you install it though
And IF you go the clamwin route, install spyware terminator, it has an option to have clamwin integrated into it. It provides much more protection than just having clamwin by itself.
Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
In other words, ClamWin is an on-demand scanner… but does NOT offer continual/resident/RealTime anti-virus protection.
At least, that’s what their documentation says. I have not ever tried it. If anyone who has can offer a claim to the contrary…
I think Spyware Terminator uses clamwin in their realtime protection against viruses/malware/spyware… I could be wrong. Clamwin could just be for scanning in spyware terminator.
You’re right, spyware terminator uses Clamwin in their Realtime protection and scanning.
However from what I saw in a few forums, there’s claim by those whom install it that it’s slowing their computer down. If the claim is true then, I doubt that the OP system which running Windows 98 with 64MB RAM able to handle it.
If he uses mdgx’s Win98 to Me conversion program (provided he can get a window me dvd…) , his computer will run a bit smoother though. But it will still be slow as you say.
