Windows 98se/Me will not have Avast antivirus after 2009 :(

I want to thank you for keeping my elderly mother’s computer free from viruses, for the past 4 years.

I just found this information this evening. It made me realize, after the end of 2009, mom’s Computer, running windows 98se will no longer have antivirus.

I knew you were going to do some great upgrades soon, but it didn’t dawn on me the ramifications.
I do have time to try and get her a newer computer. I thought others might want to take this time to replace their older computers too.

Once again, thanks for protecting the older computers, after all others stopped. You’re the best!

Avast will work with windows2000 for a while yet. Perhaps you can install it on her computer. You can find w2k pretty cheap these days(that’s what I did). Avast is running now on my old laptop PII/160mb and all seems well!

No need to panic yet.
The statement is an at least announcement. Support for 4.8 will probably continue for 9 to 12 months 5.X is released.

Maybe defs. will still be available even if program updates cease.

You could move her to XP if her system can handle it.

It doesn’t say we will stop issuing updates after Dec 31, 2009. It just says it is supported [at least] until that date.

Realistically, I’d say we will support 4.x updates for the next 6-12 months.
