avast on my vista SP3 laptop is being switched off by Windows, something to do with DET… its only started since I re registered to the latest avast update… Can anyone tell me how to switch this windows thing off or repair the cause??

Welcome to the forums, doogiedoes 
First, try a repair of avast. The below is for XP but you should be able to do something similar in Vista.
To do a repair of avast :
Control panel > Add/remove programs > click once on avast to select it > click on Change/Remove > scroll down the left pane and click on repair > click OK> follow directions
