Windows says avast is installed 'but there is no anti-spyware app' after avast update

Hello,
After the avast app update of december 2024, Windows security center detects that avast is installed as firewall and anti-virus but ‘there is no anti-spyware app’. Already tried resetting the WMI, and reinstalling avast. Went back to a system restore point before the avast update, everything back to normal! Avast is also registered as anti spyware app, until i do the update again. The app is working normally and says ‘you are protected’. All security settings that are malware related are active. There was a windows update a few days ago (KB5048703) but it didn’t give a security notice unil i updated avast. So is there really a problem or is this just windows not registering avast fully? Is this a bug in the update that can be fixed with the next update?

Avast is an Anti Virus application which would also include looking out for spyware, malware, PUPs, etc. through its various shields, protection.

But I have only been using Avast Free for just over 20 years and this has been my understanding.

thank you for your reply!
That’s what’s so confusing. I see the same images as you posted. Everything is working. But still windows gives the notification ‘you have no antispyware app’. First time after the app update it said that the function was inactive. When i wanted to activate it, it asked ‘do you trust this publisher’, Ok, nothing happened. Did a reset of WMI as adviced on the avast website. Then i reinstalled avast and then it says ‘you have no anti-spyware’, but the firewall and antivirus are registered. Same thing on another laptop.
Did the update create some glitch in the communication between windows and avast. And is it safe to use it in this way if everything is clearly working?

I would say this is on Windows and not Avast, Avast has never had a specific anti-spyware app/component.

I don’t see anything like this in Win10 Security Settings.

I’m still running Avast Free version 24.10.9535a (build 24.10.9535.886), I stuck with that as there were some who had issues with 24.11.xxxx

Ok. The version number i see with the last update is 24.12xxxxx So does an older version of avast give the same security as long as you update the virus definitions?
When i checked the version number i discovered a feedback button ‘to improve the app’. So reported the problem there also. Maybe they’ll fix it in a next update? Thank you for your advice!

You’re welcome.

To a certain degree the monthly micro updates are small (can include improvements and or bug fixes) and not major updates like an Annual update. So for the most part the old version will still give the same level protection. The Virus Definitions updates are more crucial and given the small footprint of any VPS and or Streaming Updates they shouldn’t impact you.

Today there was a new ‘bug fix’ update which messed up the integration with windows even more. Now it says there is avast firewall, but windows defender and avast are running at the same time as anti-virus. ‘This may slow your computer down’ says the notification. Indeed defender is active as if there was no 3th party app installed. The anti-spyware/malware thing is the same: ‘no app’. Going to a restore point prior to the update doesn’t help. Now it says that windows firewall is active, not avast. Checked it, and indeed it was active. Normally it blanks out if you install a 3th party antivirus. So i went back to an image i made in november. Had to redo windows security update, but now everything is back to normal. Windows is registrating avast in all 3 categories. So now i’m back on version 24.11 and keeping the virus definitions up to date. Made an in-app report of the problem to avast. Don’t know if they really read those things if you are using the free version. Still don’t know why this problems occurs and what can be done to really remediate it. All the obvious things have been done (reset wmi, doing a sfc scan etc.)

I’m now on the latest Avast version - avast! free 24.10.61324.12.9725a (build 24.12.9725.897)

And I’m still not seeing this on my windows 10 system which has also had a fairly recent windows update. Showing Win 10 version - 10.0.19045 Build 19045 - I’m still getting regular Windows Updates, so I assume (dangerous I know) it’s up to date.

Has something gone wrong with your cut-and-paste of version number?
Do you mean: 24.12.9725a (build 24.12.9725.897)

That would be a yes - 24.12.9725a (build 24.12.9725.897) UI 1.0.826 - I updated my forum signature and used that. Looks like that update didn’t stick.
