Windows Vista 32 bit aswVmm.sys Issues

Hello,

I started my Sony Vaio laptop this morning running Windows Vista 32 bit, and I received an error code stating the following file was damaged, missing or corrupt:

\windows\system32\Drivers\aswVmm.sys

I looked online and it stated that this was an avast! file. I know that others have had this issue resolved, but those posts were year old or more. I tried to download the programs listed in those threads, but the links are dead for some of them. I was hoping that someone can help me out with this problem. I need this computer desperately since it contains work documents, not to mention irreplaceable photos etc. that I want to recover. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!

uninstall and reinstall avast…follow instructions

Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility

you have a Gmail account, then you have free online storage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Drive / http://www.gcflearnfree.org/googledriveanddocs

I would uninstall the app, however, my computer never boots all the way up. I am stuck at the screen shown in the attached image.
