Absolutely zero applications are working. I can’t boot into safe mode no matter what approach I take. The f8 key during boot doesn’t do it and changing the boot with msconfig doesn’t work either because the run command won’t work.
Can’t run hitman, avast, photoshop, iTunes…basically any application at all.
Comes up with “Windows cannot find the specified file, path…” blah, blah with every application. The only thing working now is the internet.
The only virus I saw visible during all of this was the “XP Antivirus 2010” fake antivirus thing coming up saying I’ve got a million infections and “need to register NOW!”
I will build a shrine in honor of whoever fixes this.

Do you have some tools ready ;D
Download OTL to your Desktop (If you use Firefox right click and select save as)
[]Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
[]Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
In fact, Notepad can’t even run. All applications with the exceptions of the internet and that OTL I ran still do not open. Everything I click comes up as “Windows cannot find the specifed file, path…” blah, blah.
When your programs fail to start due to a rogue/fake anti-malware infection, just download Hitman Pro and start it while holding down the left Ctrl-key until its window appears. This will instruct Hitman Pro to terminate all non essential processes in the user’s context, including the malicious application that terminates any program you want to run.
In this example Hitman Pro is started in Force Breach mode to take out the rogue Security Tool infection.
ISOBurner this will allow you to burn OTLPE.iso to a CD and make it bootable. Just install the programme, from there on in it is fairly automatic. Instructions NOTE: Not required if you already have a cd burning programme
Second
[*]Download OTLPE.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 276.7Mb in size so it may take some time to download.
[*]When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD
[*]Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created. Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
[*]As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads
[*]Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop. Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
[*]Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
[*]Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
[*]When asked “Do you wish to load the remote registry”, select Yes
[*]When asked “Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning”, select Yes
[*]Ensure the box “Automatically Load All Remaining Users” is checked and press OK
[]OTL should now start.
[]Drag and drop this attached scan.txt into the Custom scans and fixes box
[*]Press Run Scan to start the scan.
[*]When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
[*]Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
[*]Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
[*]Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
[*]You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
[*]Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.
Following those instructions, I was unable to boot from the CD.
According to the instructions on that website, they said that most “newer” PCs of the last years have that option during boot. I don’t know if this is to blame, but this PC is from 2002.
So, out of absolute frustration that nothing whatsoever was working, I just decided to live without this computer for a while (5 days).
Turned it on today and everything was working fine. In fact, since Comcast switched their default Antivirus software from McAfee to Norton, we were given a free download of Norton. Once installed, I updated the software and ran a quick scan and it found a tracking cookie.
I’ll run a full-scan next.
Ah, well. Was looking forward to building that shrine to the winner. Guess I’ll have to do it for fun, haha.
