XP hanging on boot, aswRvrt.sys

Hi all,

I have an XP machine that hangs on boot in both normal and safe mode. After 10 mins or so the desktop will eventually load. I’ve run FRST and have attached my text file. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello,

How this happened?

Hi TwinHeadedEagle

I don’t know what lead up to this, it isn’t my computer. All the owner knows is that it doesn’t boot properly anymore, it always takes about 10 mins to boot. In safe mode it hangs on aswRvrt.sys.

I’ve tried cleaning up the startup routine, uninstalling the printer, malware scan, reg scan, etc. No luck.

Thanks,

Download attached fixlist.txt and save it to your USB flashdrive as fixlist.txt

Boot into Recovery Environment

Start FRST in a similar manner to when you ran a scan earlier, but this time when it opens …

[*] Press the Fix button once and wait.
[*] FRST will process fixlist.txt
[*] When finished, it will produce a log fixlog.txt on your USB flashdrive.

Exit out of Recovery Environment and post me the log please.

Try to boot Windows normally…

Attached is the Fixlog.txt file.

The computer is still hanging on boot, in both normal and safe mode. When in safe mode it now hangs on Mup.sys.

Thanks,

You said after 10 mins Desktop will eventually load. Can you try it now?

Yes, the desktop will eventually load, the time it hangs is still about 10 mins.

Let me know when it loads.

I get the Windows XP screen with the progress bar right away. The screen then goes black and stays that way for 6 mins.
Finally, after 6 mins the Windows Login screen appears.

Let me know when it boots completely.

I don’t understand your question. It has booted completely now, it takes about 6 mins to get to the login screen.

Let me know if you require anything else.

Sorry, I didn’t understand.

Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

[*]Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
[*]Press Scan button.
[*]It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
[*]The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

The requested files are attached.

I have to post only one attachment at a time. Here is the 2nd file.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

[*]Right-click on

icon and select

Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
[*]Press the Fix button just once and wait.
[*]If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
[*]When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

The requested file is attached.

A reboot was required after running the fix, the boot took just under 6 mins.

I need you to run Avastclear utility that will get rid of all Avast remnants.

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

It will ask you to reboot to Safe Mode, please press No, we want to run it from Normal mode.

At Avast version, please choose Avast Free. Press Continue and let it run. When it is complete, restart your PC.

I’ve run AvastClear twice, both times it hangs on deleting aswFW.sys

Shall I try in safe mode?

Can you get into Safe Mode?

Sure, I can boot into safe mode. It hangs the same time of 6 mins and it is stuck on Mup.sys but I get in eventually.

The AvastClear program gets stuck at the same point, deleting aswFW.sys. The status bar is filled but the program never finishes.

I’m beginning to think this is a hardware issue, not a software.
