XP Pro suddenly won't boot

I have been reading this forum about this issue…you encourage new threads…so here it is.
Yesterday the computer died. No new software, no updates other than the automatic Avast updates.
The screen told me the Ethernet Adaptor was trying to resolve the address.
Reboot. Tries to open, hangs at aswRvrt.sys, which a search indicates sometimes an Avast update issue. No normal boot, no SafeMode boot. I reset the BIOS to default, opened for 10 minutes and shut down. A lot of the fixes I read want you to save things to the desktop…but I cannot get there. I have downloaded to a thumbdrive the FRST file (I think that’s what it is), but not sure what to do to get it to load, if that’s what you recommend. I can get to some things, in repair, looks good but cannot go anywhere else.
USB doesn’t seem to work…I had to plug in an ancient keyboard to do anything and the USB mouse is inop.
When I light it off, it goes into a loop of trying to boot.
What more information can I give you?
Thanks.
Dave

I might add to streamline efforts a bit.
I have no recovery disc. Never have. But, I do have an external hard drive with a Macrium Reflect boot disc with a full system snapshot…OS and all…from this fall.
However, until someone explains this is the way to proceed, I sit here.
Thanks

I was able to stop automatic restart.
Got a blue screen with this:
Blue screen:
Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
(the screen is offset to the left, so I can’t read all of it)
NTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, (resta?)rt your computer. If this screen appears again, follow (?) steps:
Bunch more BS, followed by:
(?)ical information:
STOP: 0x000000ED (0x8A1C0030, 0x0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Here is what has transpired.
Selected “boot from cd”, loaded a tool, minixp, similar to Windows PE, found the aswRvrt.sys, tool identified it as “avast”.
Removed that file.
Computer booted normally.
Add/Remove programs, removed Avast.
Went through my files and removed all traces of Avast.
Now I will search the registry and remove any trace from there.
With all the folks reporting this issue over the last year plus, on all sorts of computer forums, you would think, maybe, Avast would get the idea something is amiss.
All you have to do is type aswRvrt.sys computer shut down, and you would be amazed. NOT just XP, but Vista and 7 affected, also.
TomsHardware, bleepingcomputer, all over.
Nice.
I’ll try again in 3-5 years.

You can ofcourse also wait a till January.
A new version will be released.
