Yahoo adware

Avast 18.2.2328 on Windows 10

I just realized that a fake Yahoo search engine has replaced the default Google with something that might be called “Yaahoo”. Firefox forum thought it might be malware, but didn’t know anything about it. Google still shows in setup as the default, and Yahoo is not listed in the search options, but when I click on the search box it goes to the spoof Yahoo page instead. It seems to be some kind of adware trying to get you to click on links to its advertisers.

There is one suspicious file in the Firefox program : softokn3.dll. Is this a known PUP? Is Yaahoo a known malware?

MWB doesn’t report anything amiss. Is there a way to get MWB to look for this specific malware?

Try AdwCleaner >> https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

If still problems, follow instructions here >> https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=194892.0

Thanks. I may have to try that. But, today a search on Firefox used Google instead of the fake Yaahoo. I don’t know what made the difference. Stay tuned for further developments.

What made the difference is Firefox stopping you from using the real Yahoo search. I always had my default search as Yahoo UK after a firefox update on the Firefox ESR version 52.7.2, Yahoo is no longer on the list of search engines.

Trying to install the Yahoo Search returns no longer compatible with less than FF 55.0.

I don’t know if this would also be related.
