Yahoo email slow...very slow

I know this subject has been posted before but I’m getting the same problem. Every email is so slow. The last email took 96 seconds to send. When I stopped Avast running it worked fine. I’m using Firefox version 4. Version 5 is total crap.
Any ideas how to resolve this please?

Update to version 6 ?

It’s no problem with Firefox, it’s an Avast issue.

Sorry update to Avast 6 as my reading is that you have version 5 unless I am confused

I have Avast 6

Which avast…?
Which version…?
OS…?

XP

Which SP on XP…??
Still don’t know which avast and which version…??

As I said previously Avast version 6

there have been 4 avast 6 releases…so he is asking for avast 6.? ? ? ?

Sorry, but if you don’t answer any questions, we can’t help you…

What haven’t I answered?

SP3

Full Avast version is 6.0.1203

OK, I’m late in joining the party, but I too have some questions.

Since you mention “I’m using Firefox version 4. Version 5 is total crap”

Then I take it you are using Yahoo webmail (see #### below), e.g. viewed through your browser (otherwise I can see no point in mentioning your browser) or a POP3/SMTP account ?

What shield are you stopping or are you stopping all of them (not advisable) ?

If you are using web mail, then it is the Web Shield that would monitor your HTTP traffic whilst viewing your email.
If you use an email program, like Thunderbird, etc. then it is the Mail Shield that monitors your email traffic.

If using webmail then you would presumably log on using an HTTPS page, which is validated before opening your email account probably on an HTTP page. Is this how you log on ?

When I stop Avast only from running I have no problem.

Yep DavidR I log on via yahoo email.I’m only stopping Avast. There’s no problem when Avast is not running.

I asked what element you stopped and gave suggestions on which to stop based on your method of collecting email, web mail view through browser, stop the web shield, email viewed/downloaded through an email program, stop the mail shield.

This stops you going on-line with all your protection disabled, browsing in the nude.

To start with the Web Shield doesn’t monitor HTTPS (secure encrypted) connection to keep prying eyes out.

I used your link to log on to my BT email account, which is handled by Yahoo and I had no problem with the log in and then it redirects to my email account, which is an HTTP page (image1) and monitoring the web shield traffic being scanned there is no scan of the https link you gave and the http page contents get scanned, image2.

So it is working as expected for me with the Web Shield (and all shields) enabled. On firefox 5.0 which you think is cr*p ;D

What is your firewall ?
Do you have any privacy function/feature in the firewall or another application that does that ?

Thanks for your time DavidR but the issue isn’t to do with any web shield or privacy function/features. Yahoo email worked fine until I upgraded to the latest version. I can’t revert back to the old version so it’s an issue with Avast.
I use Zone Alarm.
You say it works for you but you’re referring to a BT account and not a yahoo account.

The logon if from exactly the same location, the redirect may be slightly different, but the process is exactly the same and would be treated in the same way by the web shield.

This flip flopping between https and http is a known issue with ZA Pro or any version of ZA with the Privacy function enabled and avast. It sees moving from https to http via the localhost proxy as somehow suspect.

So you could confirm if you have ZA Pro or that privacy feature (?) and try with it disabled.

Either that or you may have to manually set your browser to use the web shield proxy.
